Iím brand new to mac computing (I bought an eMac this week) and I need a text editor.

On my Windows machine I use TextPad and on my Linux machine I use Kedit or Kate.

Iíd heard about BBEdit, but on checking it out discovered that itís too expensive for my needs (home computing only, no commercial use) so I downloaded the trial version of TextWrangler.

TextWrangler seems to fill most of my needs except it doesnít support HTML syntax highlighting and an HTML -aware spell checker.

I found a couple of references to SubEthaEdit in the Essential Apps thread so Iíll check that out.

Are there any other text editors I should consider before my trial period of TextWrangler expires and I have to shell out some of my hard earned cash?

SubEthaEdit - that's all you need. :)

SubEthaEdit didn't have all the functions I needed. It was missing a block select, add and remove line breaks, rewrap quoted text to name just a few things.

If you use Kedit on linux and are happy with it, is this the same thing? http://www.drycarbon.com/macosx/kedit/

There's an (albeit older and discontinued) version of BBEdit which is free. http://www.barebones.com/products/bblite/index.shtml
Don't know if it has the features you're after though (just make sure you run the os x version in the archive, not the classic)

Isn't there still a version of BBEdit Lite being produced for free?

I ended up buying TextWrangler, but will use SubEthaEdit as my HTML editor because it has syntax highlighting and automatic previewing of HTML files in Safari.

Thanks for the links and advice.

If you want a text editor especially for HTML PageSpinner is the way to go, it's not perfect but it's pretty good and has handy features like built in validation etc... SubEthaEdit is good but a bit simple. BBEdit is the best though. You can still get BBEdit lite from a few places but I think really you have to get TextWrangler these days or pay for the full version of BBEdit
