I have three machines, a Windows PC, an eMac and a SuSE Linux machine connected together via an ADSL modem/switch. The Linux machine is running Samba server and I use it as a file server.

The PC will connect to the Samba server without any problems, but the eMac will only connect to the Samba server if the PC is running.

If iím just running the eMac and the Linux machine I cannot ping the Linux machine from the eMac. Turn on the PC and presto I can ping the Linux machine from the eMac. Turn off the PC and I can still ping the Linux machine from the eMac.

Similarly if iím just running the eMac and the Linux machine I cannot connect to the Samba server, turn on the PC and I can connect to the Samba server from the eMac. Turn off the PC and I can still connect to the Samba server from the eMac.

Why do I have to run the PC just to connect to the Linux machine from the eMac?

How are you trying to connect? via Finder?

If you select finder, press command + K it should open a connect to server dialog box, type in the address in this syntax: smb://your.pcs.ip.address/

Try that and see how you go
