View Full Version : Graphic Designer Wanted for OSX app Icon

14th September 2004, 03:42 PM
Hi all

Iíve got an OS X app (Freeware) near the end of completion, but donít have the time to draw an app icon for it. Just putting out a call for someone:

a- Who has experience drawing OS X icons before (ie. Knows the Apple UI guidelines in regard to designing icons

b- OR someone who is a greaphic designer and wants to have a go at drawing a great app icon

Either reply to this thread or contact me on thomas@code4days.com

Someone who wants exposure and experience would be preferable as I wouldnít be able to pay you much (other than put a credit/link in the app about you), but if you do a good job there will be PLENTY more work for you in the near future.

What does the app do? What style of icon are you thinking of? Is there a particular colour scheme inside the app itself?

Basically, its a "Quick way to search through Address Book", type app. Rather than making it a longer process to quickly look up a person's email, phone etc, this app is entirely controlled by the keyboard (and mouse if you really want).

I would like an icon that implies the app is realted to Address Book, without being too obvious (ie. using Apple's Address Book icon in some way is not what i want).

As for style and colour, the app uses a dark blue style interface, so definately the different shade of blues.

Hope this helps.

Contact me if you'd like screenshots etc.

Maybe everyone that is interested should just post him a sample of your work and then you get chosen if you are good and its the look they are looking for.

I know I am gonna give it a go.

I'm happy for anyone to have a go :)

Head over to the MacGeeks (http://www.macgeeks.net) Employment Opportunities forum for more details and a screen of the app.

Email me if you want more detailed screenshots - thomas@code4days.com

Make sure you read the Apple UI guidelines (http://developer.apple.com/documentation/UserExperience/Conceptual/OSXHIGuidelines/index.html) for Icons.

Even though you dont want to use the address book icon in a different way I have an idea that may convey what your after.

The Address book icon, but blue in colour to match the app. The :cmd: symbol instead of the @ symbol on the front of the address book to convey you can use the keyboard in some way. And the magnifying glass from sherlock to show that its searching the address book.

Thanks to all that had a go!! It was basically an open invitation for anyone to come up with an icon. I posted both here and on MacGeeks (http://www.macgeeks.net/) and got quite a few interested parties. In the end a great designer (he's ottopia on macgeeks) came up with the perfect icon. If you'd like to check the icon out, the app page can be found at http://www.code4days.com/quickaddress.

Thanks again to those that submitted designs, good to see that we can get Aussie's into this stuff. Some of the quotes i got from overseas design places were crazy  $$$$$$

Looks great!

Well done, thomas.

Checked out your site with the pictures showing the app. My only suggestion is I do hope the screenshots showing phonenumbers and names are fake. If those phonenumbers for yourself are yours... I'd probably suggest you screen grab using fake accounts/info and/or smudge the existing details.

The application looks good.

Yeah they are all fake :P

I think my email might not be though.....bring on the spam

I bet one of those phone numbers is real, or at least it exists :P The Gentleman with the e-mail at CQU, the phone number matches for that area ;)

Sorry, I've got a knack for matching geographical locations with the phone-number prefixes. You learn these things after a few months in a callcentre.

I guess i'm just asking for trouble leaving me own details in a screenshot
