My Macbook appears to have been struggling for a while now and I am currently experimenting with programs running in the background to see if they are contributing to this problem. While doing this I found (I am no expert by a long shot) I had two firewalls running. One is the Apple one and I have NetBarrier running as well. This may seem obvious but is running two firewalls creating a conflict? I have turned the Apple one off at this stage. Any advice welcome.

Yes, two firewalls are not recommended.

They are both sniffing/looking at the same packets. This could lead to conflicts or unintended blocking of data.

Having said that, it is possible if you manage them very well. Similar to AV programs, conflicts are likely, but may not occur.

I suggest sticking with only one.

Consider not running one at all. I've never run a software firewall and I've never had an infection or breach of any kind. I'm happy enough with my hardware firewall.
