Hello. Just wondering what I need to connect my Macbook Pro to show desktop onscreen for watching
TV, movies etc from the computer.

Normally with my windows based machines I can plug in an RGB cable. Is there an adaptor or a lead I can buy?

You can get a mini display port to HDMI cable that will do the job. It plugs into the Thunderbolt port. You will also need to open up the audio settings and choose the HDMI option to output the sound. You will only need to do this a couple of times as the MBP will learn to automatically use this option when you plug in the cable. You can get the cable from an Apple store: Belkin 4K Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Cable (2 m/6.5 ft.) - Apple Store (Australia) (http://store.apple.com/au/product/HGFC2ZM/A/belkin-4k-mini-displayport-to-hdmi-cable-2-m65-ft)

I had a look at the "sound" settings if thats what you mean. Didn't see any thing to select HDMI option? I have OSX 10.9.5

You have to do it after you have connected the cable. It may list the TV you have connected to as an option.
