View Full Version : Warning: 1Password 5 from web store won't sync with iCloud - must buy Mac App Store v

I've been a user of 1password since version 3 and it has become so integrated into what I do that I'm stuck with it.

Anyway, since they released v5 on iOS you've no longer been able to sync between idevices and your Mac. It wasn't until Yosemite was released and the intro of iCloud Drive that this syncing was restored


To my shock after upgrading the wife's computer to Yosemite yesterday, that even though we have the most up to date version of 1Password, because we bought it directly from the developer (agilebits) that it won't sync via iCloud. If I bought it via the Mac App Store, then it would work.

At no time did I receive an email or any info stating this. All I received were messages saying that I needed to upgrade to Yosemite to get things working again

This seems pretty crap and is something that Apple have implemented (only Mac App Store apps can access iCloud Drive).

I've lodged a help request/complaint to see if they can offer codes to move over to the Mac App Store version. Will see what happens. I don't have the $44 to spend on getting the same app again.

I have heard from others with this same problem that they are pretty quick about getting this sorted out so you should be ok.

Happened to me too. Upgraded my MacBook Pro to 1Password 5 and got a message after I upgraded that it would no longer sync with iCloud. So annoyed. I've emailed them. I read on their forum page that they will try and work something out for affected customers. You need to email them. I'm still waiting for a reply. There is no way I'm going to pay for the app again just to regain iCloud syncing. They better sort it out.

I'm syncing mine with Dropbox and haven't had a problem.

Dropped them an email yesterday.
I'm more annoyed that I wasn't bombarded with emails stating that my version won't work.
We only upgraded to Yosemite for 1Password. If I knew it wasn't going to work, we'd have stayed with Mavericks.

I'm not fully comfortable having my 1password sync with Dropbox.

I've been using dropbox since the start and it hasn't missed a beat. When they first introduced iCloud syncing I thought about migrating but never bothered. Still works a treat and is very imbedded in my workflow.

I'm also a long time 1Password user...
have v5 on iPad / iPhone... but Mac Book Pro is still on v4.

Will look at upgrading it this weekend... as it is a free upgrade for us 1Password4 customers. Mmmm if updating via the app... I'm assuming that will all go ok and sync if I want to switch from Dropbox to iCloud Drive?

I have been syncing via Dropbox though... no real problems ever... but did end up with two versions of my data at one point (I think it was the last major upgrade)

I sync my 1Password with dropbox (I used to sync with iCloud but found it was not as reliable).

I am disappointed that they removed the feature though as I change back to iCloud sync every so often just so that I have 2 working databases in the event that one service is down.

I emailed them about this too (I have been a 1Password user since version 2) and have purchased all the various upgrades for my Mac and iOS devices.

It would be nice if they can do something for existing customers, but I get the feeling all we will get is an apology.

From what I have read on the AgileBits blog, it is pretty much tough titties for users who purchased from the webstore.
If you want iCloud Sync, you'll have to pony up money again to buy the latest version.
As developers only receive a limited number of "Free" coupons, this obviously doesn't cover the whole user base.

During development of 1Password 4, we found that iCloud syncing worked fine for our webstore version and we made the mistake of leaving it enabled in the final release. We worried a little bit that this might change in the future so we mentioned in a few places that “if iCloud was important to you that you should purchase from the Mac App Store to ensure it remains available”, but in retrospect, it was way too easy to miss this warning. We should have simply hid iCloud in the non-Mac App Store version of 1Password entirely and we would have avoided this entire problem.

I’m sorry we didn’t hid or disable iCloud in the webstore version of 1Password 4.

Now that we’re here, we need to find a way forward. Unfortunately I cannot give you a free copy of the Mac App Store version as we’re limited to a very small set of coupons, so we cannot go that route. Another option would be to switch to Dropbox syncing. You can sign up for free account with up to 2GB of free space, so it won’t cost you anything. Let's call this what it is.

The developer of 1Password is getting screwed because of how Apple has played this.

And by extension their users have also been screwed.

I've just started using it, and find the Dropbox syncing to be just fine.

Since I'm a long time Dropbox user, I don't have any issues doing this. In the meantime, don't rage too much at the developer, they are in a tough spot, with little control over the App store setup.

A quick google will reveal many software developers taking issue with the App store, which has led to some leaving.

Here is the official final word taken from AgileBits discussions from their founder.

1) In short, they made a mistake by offering iCloud Syncing in their webstore bought versions.
2) There is no way to get a transfer to the App Store version (unless you purchased in the last 30 days then they'll refund you your webstore version so you can buy it on the Mac App Store).

iCloud syncing was disabled in 1Password 5 for all users who were using the Webstore version of 1Password. Here's what changed and why.

Let's start with some background on iCloud and 1Password 4, and discuss what's changed in 1Password 5.

We first introduced iCloud in 1Password 4 for iOS (released December 2012), and later in 1Password 4 for OS X (released October, 2013). During the development of the Mac app, we found iCloud syncing worked both in the Mac App Store version, and in the version from our website, so we decided to take the simpler path (or so we thought!) and leave iCloud available in both versions. We thought it was simpler because it allowed the same code to be used in both versions.

Part of me worried that future updates to iCloud or OS X would prevent the Webstore from working properly with iCloud, so the user guide and purchase guides mentioned that if iCloud was important, the purchase should be made in the Mac App Store to ensure iCloud would continue to work.

Fast forward to 1Password 5 for Mac: 1Password 5 is a major release and one of the significant changes we made in this version was a complete re-write of iCloud syncing. 1Password 5 switched to Apple's new iCloud technology, CloudKit, which is only available on OS X Yosemite and iOS 8, and limited to Mac App Store apps only. After this change we were no longer able to offer iCloud syncing in the Webstore version of 1Password.

Roustem posted a really good blog article on why these changes needed to be made, as well as some history of 1Password and iCloud:

Long story short, if you are using the AgileBits Webstore version of 1Password, iCloud is no longer available. The only way to re-enable iCloud is to re-purchase directly from the Mac App Store.

Thankfully our Webstore version has other syncing options available so it is NOT mandatory to purchase from the Mac App Store. 1Password also supports Wi-Fi as well as Dropbox, so you can continue syncing your data using one of these methods.

I understand that this was a confusing transition, and I’m sorry about that. In retrospect we should have never added iCloud syncing to the Webstore version of 1Password. We have learned from this and will do our best to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I'm sure you will still have some questions so I collected the most relevant ones here, as well as their answers, so you didn't have to go digging.

Can you transfer my Webstore license to the Mac App Store?

Unfortunately there is no way for us to transfer your purchase from our store to Apple’s Mac App Store. This is a key feature we’ve been wanting Apple to add to the App Store for years, as it would make transitions like these much simpler.

While we would love Apple to add this feature, I can see from Apple's perspective that it doesn't make financial sense for them to allow purchases from our store to be transferred to theirs. They would have to foot the bill for data transfer costs without having any revenue. It would be like taking your TV to Walmart for a warranty repair when you purchased at Best Buy.

At the end of the day, however, this inflexibility puts us in a very tight spot as we're not able to help transition users to the Mac App Store. All we can do is put 1Password on sale, and we've done that, but it's certainly not ideal by any stretch of the imagination. Hopefully some day Apple will find a solution that works for everyone.

Can I get a refund for my AgileBits Webstore purchase?

If you purchased within the last 30 days, we would be happy to give you a refund from our store. In this case, please send your license key or purchase receipt to our team at support+webstoreicloud@agilebits.com and we'll process your refund as soon as possible.

You could then purchase directly from the Mac App Store and re-enable iCloud sync.

I use Dropbox (or Wi-Fi) syncing; what changes do I need to make?

There's no changes required. The Webstore version of 1Password continues to support both of these sync methods so you need not switch.

Why did you allow iCloud syncing in the Webstore version?

In retrospect we should have never allowed iCloud syncing in the Webstore version. Hindsight is 20/20, but here is what we were thinking at the time.

First, we really dislike having differences between the Webstore and Mac App Store versions. Each difference requires different code paths, complicates the user guide, and makes it harder to answer customer questions as the answer will vary depending on where they purchased.

As I mentioned above, when we found iCloud syncing worked both in the Mac App Store version, and in the version from our website, we thought it would be simpler to leave iCloud available in both versions.

We did our best to advise users that the iCloud support provided in the webstore version was unofficial: the user guide and purchase guides mentioned that if iCloud was important, the purchase should be made in the Mac App Store to ensure iCloud would continue to work with future versions.

Unfortunately it was easy to miss these warnings so many people were surprised when iCloud was removed from the Webstore version. We've learned from this and will curb our optimism in the future when dealing with technologies we do not have complete control over.

Why didn't you use iCloud Drive?

We looked into using iCloud Drive but CloudKit had several key advantages. From Roustem's blog post:

CloudKit stores data as records instead of files. It allows apps to perform partial record fetches and updates that make syncing more efficient and do not force downloading or uploading an entire file.
Remote CloudKit database supports queries that allow 1Password perform syncing faster compared to scanning a directory of files.
CloudKit supports “server change tokens”. They are used by 1Password to quickly test for changes made on other devices.
1Password on both Mac and iOS uses CloudKit Remote Push Notifications to perform syncing almost instantly when a change made on a remote device or Mac.
CloudKit provides a special record asset type (CKAsset) that is used to sync large attachments.
In addition to all these advantages, the move to iCloud Drive would have created problems of its own since iCloud Drive requires iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, which would have caused syncing to break for many users anyway.

In the end we decided that the benefits of CloudKit were too good to pass up and rewrote 1Password's iCloud syncing to use it.

Does this change mean you're abandoning the web store version of 1Password?

Not at all! Apart from iCloud sync, the web store version is every bit as full-featured, supported and secure as the Mac App Store version. We hold both versions to the same standards of design, development and customer service, and we will continue to update the web store version regularly alongside (and sometimes even before) the App Store version.

I like 1Password and Agilebits, but it does still live a bitter taste that Agilebits has not restored iCloud syncing.

Although they state that there is nothing they can do to help purchasers of the webstore version of 1Password (other than put the App Store version on sale), there actually are things they can do.

1. The could temporarily make the App Store version of 1Password free so that people who purchased the webstore version can download it. I know that there will be others who take advantage of this but they could do it. There was a situation with another app which I had purchased where changes forced by Apple meant their were differences with applications. The developer was also apologetic and said that their hands were tied. I suggested making the app free for a few days whilst alerting their existing users of the fact so that they could transition across. The developer agreed this was a good compromise and made the app free for a week.

Agilebits could do the same thing.

2. Agilebits could refund website purchases to allow them to repurchase on the app store. They just don't want to do this as it would be costly for them but it actually is something they could do.

3. They could code iCloud syncing on the webstore version to work with iCloudDrive (rather than CloudKit). The process involved would be similar to what they had implemented in previous versions of 1Password. Although they would now have 2 different applications to support.

In the end I still think 1Password is a fantastic application (and is an application I use everyday), but it is a bit disingenuous to say that there is nothing they can do for webstore purchases of their application.

That's my 2cents anyway.

I think that they could go one step further: build and maintain their own secure, encrypted sync method/server.

It would also streamline the sync options between the iOS/OS X/Android/Windows versions (currently, cross-platform sync relies on Dropbox or Direct Wi-Fi).

Great idea, they wont do it because *shock horror* they will "lose" money. They have been making big money on their apps and they dont want to let go, not even for existing customers. They *could* do exactly as you suggest, but they wont.

I've resisted 1Password from the outset. I've had free versions at times via macupdate bundles etc, or macheist, but it never did much for me. I've also always felt that Agilebits did not really give a rats about its customers. And here I am still using Wallet, not updated for a year or more, and still working everywhere because it uses Dropbox.

Do you mind telling us what you said in your email to get a refund? I have contacted them and they are non responsive on the issue. I also noted that their website discussion has now been closed to further posts as well.

I just simply said I was disappointed that there wasn't a more obvious message saying the webstore version dropped icloud.
I specifically upgraded to yosemite to get iCloud sync working with my idevices and was shocked that all of a sudden it didn't work.

I asked if there was an option to transfer to a Mac App Store license.

I indicated that I didn't have a Dropbox account and that I can't wifi sync ash Mac Pro doesn't have a airport card.

I sent the email 2 weeks ago or whenever it was. I didn't hassle them after sending as I figured they were probably swamped.

And here I am still using Wallet, not updated for a year or more, and still working everywhere because it uses Dropbox.
So, how do you find Wallet compared to 1Password?

I've emailed them also and still no response after 2 weeks. I checked out the Mac App Store and it was $43.99 to buy again. They can get stuffed. I'm so pissed that there was no warning when updating. It's really poor form of Agilebits.
