Hi,

My wife has a 60gb Mackbook Air and it only has 2gb available on the hard drive. I have emptied all the trashes, put the iphoto and itunes libraries on external drives. I want to upgrade the OS but cannot clear any additional space. I have spoken to the Apple Store but they could not provide any advice. Does anyone have suggestions for me to make space on the hard drive. Thanks Brett

Use something like Daisy Disk to get a better idea what is using all your space.

Hi Brett,

Due to the nature of the OS X file system, having less than 20% disk space free on your hard disk degrades performance. I'd back up everything - in triplicate (suggest Carbon Copy Cloner for this) - make up your own USB Mavericks installer and reformat the drive and start afresh.

If you have Mavericks downloaded and saved on another Mac, follow this guide to create a USB installer from an 8GB+ drive:
