Howdy

An odd question but it's always worth asking...

I've just bought a new MBP to replace my old iMac and I want to use my old Time Machine Drive (2 bay Raid 3tb) as the time machine on the new MBP. I'm starting from scratch (new OS, new application installs etc).

The question is if I just plug the drive into the MBP will it just take up from where the iMac left off or will it want to delete the existing data?

Any thoughts?

Thanks for any help.

A new computer means a new Time Machine backup.

Your old Time Machine backup will still be on the drive but won't get used by the new computer.

You could keep both your iMac and your MacBook Pro backing up to the same drive and it'll keep the two separate but keep both up to date.

If you want to make use of the iMac backup you'll need to use Migration Assistant to bring that data over (which can be done selectively if you want).

If you aren't keeping your old iMac then I'd give it some time until you're happy that your new MBP is all sorted and then blow away the old iMac Time Machine backup to free up some hard drive space.
