If I want to use the ipod as a back up disk, does it require battery power?

Not that I try backing up my data, the battery goes dead, and I also lose all my data.

ANy help appreciated

Thanks

You mean - if the iPod's batteries go flat, will it lose all data on it? If so - no, it acts like any other hard drive when it is powered down. :)

What I mean is if the battery is already flat or completely dead on the ipod, can you still upload and download between ibook and ipod. SO it acts as an external hard disk that can work without its own power source.

OR, does the ipod charge while connected to a computer??

Thanks

The iPod will charge while connected to the computer.

3g via firewire only but I believe the new 4g ones will charge via USB 2.0 as well.

yep. 3g will NOT charge via USB. So if you're transfering lots of data through USB2.0, I would very highly suggest you plug the ipod into the external power adapter also.
