Hey Everyone
I have recently purchased a second hand MBP (early 2011 model) 15"

Apple advises that the max Ram limit is 8GB 2X4GB but i have seen around that you can run up to 16GB.

Has anyone managed to get their machine to recognise 16GB or is it not going to work?
Wanted to get some advice before going out and buying ram from one of those awesome Chinese shops that won't refund my money if i cant use the ram LOL

Thanks for the advice in advance guys :)

Lol. It's not me that's asking. 8gb would be fine for me but he was just wondering but when I researched it came up with an 8gb limit but apparently the unit can accept up to 16gb even though apple says it won't.

Yes, 2x8GB works fine. You don't need the latest 1600MHz RAM though, 1333MHz is the spec for this machine.
Cost getting down to just over $100 for this upgrade now too !

Where is the best place to get RAM upgraded? Apple store? Do I just take it in or do I need an appointment?

Buy it from MSY or Umart and install it yourself; it's easy to do.

RAM, Memory & SSD Upgrades for Dell, HP, Apple, Mac & PC. (http://www.ramcity.com.au) Ramcity sponsor the MacTalk podcast. They are a very good company to deal with in my experience.
