Hi,

When you install 10.8 from scratch, there is an initial time of ~ 5 - 6 minutes spent doing "something" before it reboots and then installs OS X on the disk as with usual OS X releases.

What's it doing in that first stage? It is verifying the image before install?

Creating the recovery partition. Wouldnt be surprised if it verifies the image as well as it seems like it takes longer then it should.
