View Full Version : I Love Lamp-Lava Lamp Widget Released

23rd December 2005, 10:06 PM
Look, it's the most glorious rainbow ever!

Bring the 60's to your dashboard with I Love Lamp, a lava lamp widget that uses Quartz to render a non-stop stream of animated bubbles.

I Love Lamp can be downloaded from iSlayer.net (http://islayer.net/viewWidget.php?id=20)

We know this isnt a typical lava lamp but we put this together in the last 24 hours and we will do alot more tweaking in the coming weeks along with adding more lamps and sizes

Looks very cool. I don't really use Dashboard, so it's now the only widget there. :)

iSlayer you are the greatest widget maker. I have downloaded every widget you have on your site. I didnt think too much about widgets and didnt know they existed until signing up on this forum. Very exciting stuff. Great work mate!

I'll also thank Marc. Good job! :D

Great movie.

ethania05 :: Thanks!!! Comments like that really help us get excited about making these things.

We have a few more good ones on the way... we'll do our best to get them out in the next couple of weeks.

My girlfriend said 'why do you need a lavalamp widget?' - and then I ran it. So pretty. Well done! :)

I've downloaded the quartz composer plug in and put it in the library internet plug ins as advised, and I've downloaded the widget, but I can't access it.

All I have is a small box saying "This widget requires the quartz composer plug in. It can be downloaded from islayer etc. "

What have I done wrong?

24th December 2005, 06:36 AM
Make sure you take the two files that were inside the downloaded folder out and leave them sitting in the "Internet plugins" folder :)

Georgina: Inside Mac OS X => Library => Internet Plug-ins is where you should put those two files which you can download from here (http://islayer.net/files/quartzPlugins.zip). Then the widget will work.

Those plugins could make for some very funky web sites ;)

It's excellent.
I too cant wait till their is a Screen Saver Version :-)
Keep up the good work!!!!

I've carried out the advice and I now have a lamp when I click onto Dashboard.

Unfortunately it's blank, no colour, and nothing happening

Don't know if this will help, but try opening another Lava Lamp widget whilst you still have the other on open, then close the one that wasn't working.

I did that with mine this morning and it worked.

Thanks Mark, but it still doesn't work, the new lamp is just as lifeless.

Hi Georgina :)

Please make sure the plugins are in the system library folder, not your user folder. I'm almost 100% that will be it. I know because I made the same mistake!

So... the files should be in:
<your HD name>/Library/Internet Plugins/

And NOT in:
<your HD name>/Users/<your user name>/Library/Internet Plugins/

We're trying to get in contact with the guys who made the plugin so we can auto install it as I'm sure heaps of people will be asking about this.

Please let me know how it goes.

UPDATE!: Version 1.01 will probably mean that you don't need to install the plugs!

24th December 2005, 10:04 AM
I have just uploaded a new version that has the plugin bundled so you wont need to manually install them anymore

give that a try and let us know if it still doesnt work

I have them in a folder marked Internet Plug ins, but I've become very confused with it all. My brother-in-law died this morning resulting from his asbestos disease (please read the separate topic posted), so I'm not coping too well. Our Christmas is cancelled, and I was hoping the widget lamp would give me a little colour on such a bad day.

Edit: I've downloaded the new one islayer, but how is it supposed to work? Still nothing happens.

24th December 2005, 11:24 AM
I'm really sorry to hear that Georgina :(

Version 1.1 isn't far off. The liquid looks much better now, plus we've been working on the look of the lamp.

Hope you all like it :)

We are totally re doing the lava for the next update but as you can see we now have a better shape for the lamp.
We are going to have a few skins eventually including a classic lava lamp skin

CPU Usage is also waaay down in the latest dev version.
as much as 25x lower.Uses under 2% on a G5 iMac
It also supports pausing so it doesnt restart each time your open dashboard
