Whilst replying in another thread, It got me thinking about the next iteration of OS X.

I remember saying that the Lion was the biggest of the big cats, then came Mountain Lion 10.8, but what comes after 10.8? Will there be a 10.9 OS with a different name? Or will they move to OS XI with a whole new naming system?

I'm wondering what the future of Mac OS will be, will we see a huge change like from OS 9 to OS X?

Nothing as drastic at that - the shared underpinnings of iOS and OS X are pretty solid. I think the near future (1~2 years) of OS X is going to be largely about cleaning house. A lot of muck has built up over the years and while that muck is in use Apple are fighting with one arm tied behind their back.

After that, we migrate to Farmville OS. Nice place.

We're moving to prefixes now: Mountain Goat, Mountain Stream, Mountain Retreat, Mountain Dew...

technically there are a few options.

Sabertooth
Lynx
Cougar (aka a mountain lion)

That sort of thing.
But really they only need to cover 10.9. Then start fresh with 11.

Marsupial Lion?

But then the initials might confuse everyone.

Wait that may be a feature in line with where Apple is heading anyway.

To me 10.10 seems just as likely as 10.9.

Or they may just drop the name altogether and go with OS X the way they do with iOS.

And no version numbers either. It'll just be "The New OS X" :p

"Snow Mountain Lion", followed by "The New Snow Mountain Lion". After that it will be "Mountain Snow Mountain Lion" and then of course "The New Mountain Snow Mountain Lion". I think you can guess the rest ;)

I'd buy that... but I rather have OS X singing Game of Thrones cat :)

(I'm sure they could work the Great Wizard of Woz in there somewhere...)
