View Full Version : IceTV 1.02 released!

IceTV 1.02 released&#33;</span>

The wait is over. WorldTV&#39;s successor is here, sporting some new features, like program descriptions with episode names, EyeTV support (Mac Dashboard version only), and PC and pre-Tiger support via Konfabulator.

So... what are you waiting for???&#33;?&#33;?&#33;? DOWNLOAD IT&#33;&#33;&#33;

<img src=\'http://islayer.net/otherImages/widgets/V4/screens/iceguide1.jpg\' border=\'0\' alt=\'user posted image\' />
<img src=\'http://islayer.net/otherImages/IceTV/eyetv_05.png\' border=\'0\' alt=\'user posted image\' />

Please note that users now need to register to use the widget. This is to protect the Ice server from "denial of service" types of attacks (by limiting the amount of times a single user can request the feeds per day). Sorry for the inconvenience. The widget is still free for all the WorldTV features (except pay TV, which we can&#39;t do because we no longer have access to the data).

For some of the more advanced features (7 days of data and EyeTV integration), an IceTV subscription is required. A 14 day trial is available from the IceTV website if you&#39;d like to test the features.

We&#39;ve found the problem. It&#39;s just giving the wrong error ("Password does not match - please resupply password") if the username has already been taken. This should be fixed sometime early tomorrow morning.

When I was using the last Beta 4 I had quite slow Updating as well...
as well as the problems authenticating username / password.

All works now though... did notice though the version I grabbed tonight - was still called Rev 4 like the last beta? Installed it over the top though - so the back says v1.02.

Love it&#33;
Have missed having a TV widget&#33;
I&#39;m also keen for having WIN instead of 9.

And if the skins return - well thats fine by me too - but I&#39;m just happe to have it back&#33;
love the new feature of clicking on a program to get the details too&#33;
Maybe I should buy an EyeTV now too&#33;

I did notice that when you delete any recordings that have been added to the EyeTV program schedule, they still appear in the list as &#39;Rec&#39;, even after a reload.
Any plans to get Elgato to bundle a subscription for Australian users?

I think (hope) you&#39;re talking about Dashboard&#39;s slightly confusing install message. It says something like "Are you sure you want to install over a widget called IceGuide Rev 4". You&#39;re not the first to pick up on this. It&#39;s a little confusing, but if you read it then I think (hope) you&#39;ll find it&#39;s correct.

I personally don&#39;t mind at all. And I&#39;m pretty sure Ice wouldn&#39;t either, but I can&#39;t speak on their behalf. If you&#39;re just going to grab the logo images from WorldTV and rename them and override the ones in Ice, then I don&#39;t see any real harm&#33;

We can&#39;t use them because the stations might not like it.

might have been a cache issue.

Just re-downloaded it and didn&#39;t get the same message.

Can I ask, did you guys sell worldtv widget to icetv?
Or do you still own the widget and it&#39;s just an agreement to get more stable feeds, better support and things like that?

marc
6th December 2005, 07:08 AM
Ice approached us, and have been amazing. The project is a joint venture.

It feels good to have this as a more legitimate project knowing that there&#39;s a solid infrastructure behind it. It also means we can add some really cool features as they add them to their service.

marc
6th December 2005, 07:13 AM
For those game enough, some new WIN channel logos can be downloaded here (http://www.elephant.net.au/transfer/winlogos.zip).

Replace the ones found in your images/logo folder inside the widget.

Otherwise, they&#39;ll be in the next update.

Any chance that we might get a regional qld / sunshine coast feed in the future?

And am I right that there is no pay tv channels any more?

To be honest, I appreciate the amount of work that has gone into setting up the widget and the relationship with the data provider to allow for stable feeds, but for my uses, this widget seems to have lost its functionality... No paytv, subscription needed, and only one day for free will keep yourtv.com.au in my bookmarks for a while longer now.

Which is a bummer, because I absolutely loved austv/worldtv :(

paytv was always very dodgy in worldtv.i know people miss it but we had no choice.
worldtv eventually died because the feed providers stopped providing the feeds

subscription is only needed for advanced features.
all the features worldtv had are still free

Certainly possible, but it depends entirely on Ice. Please send them a request if you&#39;d like the service. I assume they&#39;ll add areas as their subscriptions grow. It&#39;d be very hard for them to start with all channels as the data is input by hand.

Just to clarify, the widget shows 1 days worth of data for free, just like WorldTV did. It&#39;s only the 7 day and EyeTV parts that require the subscription.

Cool cool, didn&#39;t mean to sound like I was raggin on it, I still think it&#39;s a great widget, though, no longer right for my needs.

Hey, who knows, down the track it may get a place back on my dashboard.

(Oh yeah, and about the multi day thing, I understand that worldtv only had one day, but there were enough other features to overlook that :) and I can&#39;t justify paying any money for free to air listings to be shown in advance when I hardly even watch fta and used to use the paytv listings exclusively, ahh well, ya win some and ya lose some)

This may be a silly question - No UK TV channel support in this version? I guess since icetv.com.au is an Australia specific site, that it isn&#39;t even a planned feature?

I didn&#39;t see it in any FAQ&#39;s about this over at iSlayer.net, and a search on this forum didn&#39;t show anything conclusive. And the widget itself doesn&#39;t have any mention of the UK in it anywhere :(

It&#39;s a bit sad for me, because since I&#39;m from the UK, I&#39;m now without a dashboard TV guide&#33; I understand that the promise of stable feeds for your main user base was probably too good to turn down. I think it would be a good idea to mention that it doesn&#39;t support UK in your FAQ&#39;s somewhere, especially since you state that all the features that were in WorldTV, are still free in the new version. Of course, this is assuming that I&#39;m not missing something...

marc
7th December 2005, 08:54 AM
LoonyPandora :: We&#39;re not sure what we&#39;re going to do about UK support. You&#39;re right, IceTV don&#39;t have any UK data, so we can&#39;t make it work in the IceTV widget. We&#39;re at a bit of a loss there...

The 1.1 version has darker description windows, however they are still *slightly* transparent. iSlayer&#39;s been bugging me to do this for a while, so you can blame me ;)

Btw, I assume you&#39;re talking about the OS X Dashboard version of the widget? The PC Konfab version has no transparency in descriptions (due to other reasons).

Yeah, I used that widget before WorldTV, but had to stop because it was so ugly and huge - I even emailed the author with a few suggestions for improvements, but didn&#39;t get a reply. I suspect it&#39;s abandoned, as he doesn&#39;t seem to have released a new version since it was first released. :-/

Congratulations on your write-up in the Sydney Morning Herald&#33; :thumbup:

Many widget developers, such as Marc Edwards and Brad Gale, the energies behind Melbourne-based iSlayer (islayer.net), make widgets for both Mac and PC, although, like most widgeteers, they do their work on Macs.

...

So far, the 20 or so widgets they have produced since Tiger appeared in April have been labours of love, given away free on the web.

...

"We saw building widgets as fun, producing something that was cool," Mr Edwards says. "We did not expect to make money. But lately we have had approaches that look commercially promising."

The first of these produced the IceTV widget, a development of one of iSlayer&#39;s earliest efforts, called AusTV, then World TV, which provides a daily guide to local TV programs.

Yep, but only the paid version. You can try out a 14 day free trial to see how it works. Very neat and tidy&#33; You just have to decide whether spending &#036;156 per year is worth Eyetv and 7 day schedules. Some say yes, some no. Just like mac.com, when they changed from free to paid. Extra features were added to it and some people stayed. Others no.

Foxtel died in the old widget
even if we hadnt teamed up with IceTV there wouldnt have been any paytv support in WorldTV now(WorldTV might not even have existed now as the free to air feeds had virtually died aswell at the end).We simply cant get the data anymore

Thats the only big thing WorldTV had that IceTV Doesnt.
WorldTV would never have been able to display more then one days data either because of the limitations of the feeds.We could never have descriptions or anything like that in WolrdTV either

i finally got iceqguide to work.

i didnt realise that once the free 14day trial ends you must reregister for the "1 day" product. I just assumed that my registration would be downgraded to 1 day.

After re-registering i also found it necessary to delete icequide prefs to recognise my new user/pw.

Suggestion to islayer:
Maybe this info should be included in the email notifying that the free trial has ended or on the islayer support page (or did i miss that?)

Can you please confirm that your old username and pass are not working as a 1 day guide now that you&#39;ve deleted the widget&#39;s prefs?

It should just switch back to 1 day as you suggested. If deleting prefs didn&#39;t fix, then it&#39;s probably a bug on the Ice server end. If so, we&#39;ll try and get it fixed ASAP so no one else has the problem.

I cannot believe that IceTV is just a money making scheme now it really sucks. Especailly when ebroadcast.com.au/tv/ is free. It&#39;s what I use now...
IceTV are a business(dont forget iSlayer is not IceTV.we just made the widget for them).They never tried to hide that.
The widget is free.its up to you what level of service you want.

Sure use ebroadcast but i know which is the easiest to use out of the 2 and it aint ebroadcast

IMHO it would be nice to see you bring back a free one that doesn&#39;t have all this registration bullshit. It&#39;s just annoying and fricken useless - like many people are going to pay&#33;

I was using ebraodcast well before widgets came out - so its not hard to go back to it :P

How come the pay-TV feeds are no longer available? Any chance of Foxtel releasing its own widget...?

Thanks islayer. Where did the original pay-TV feeds come from for AusTV and WorldTV? And why did they get screwed up?

Some of the feeds being used by people for stuff like mythtv were told to stop doing so, as it was causing problems on web sites etc.

So authors of programs grabbing this content had to stop or get sued :)

I am guessing similar things happen to the feeds being used by the old AusTV and WorldTV stuff.

I currently have icetv demo account and it seems okay, I might end up paying the fee to use it on a more regular basis as its not bad, although I must say the blurbs for some shows are certainly written crap. For example I have seen reference in many of them something along the lines.. Iceman recommends this etc.

See if I can find something in my tvguide data thats an example;

Found one;

Blurb below is for Channel 10 news;

if our IceMates out there must watch commercial News then this is probably the pick of a bad bunch. Cute presenters, more story detail and about a hundred weather crosses (for those late breaking tsunamis) and traffic updates.

And blurb below is for Channel 9 news;

Strong advice... take the kids to the park and return for SBS World News or the ABC News at 7pm. Cos IceMan told me so ...

And the blurb below is for Channel 7 news;

Much the same as National Nine News only the IceMan likes the fonts better. Well done Seven News ... darn those graphics look great&#33;

Seriously, it annoys me they put such useless crap into the description. Stick to the facts and cut the jokes.

marc ...

can confirm that both my original (expired) and new credentials now work fine.

deleting prefs must have been the trick.

happy new year

d.
marc ...

i spoke too early.

yesterday using my original (14 day exppired trial) credentials returned "expired" for all listings.

logging in with new 1 day credentials also returned "expired"

i deleted prefs and relogged in with 1 day info and all is now cool. :)

hey guys, for some reason my ice tv widget is displaying &#39;expired&#39; for every time on every channel. I had / have an account (albeit expired).

from reading (mainly islayers defensive posts) i thought it was free to get free to air listings. is this true? if so, how do i fix it?

cheers, invisi

Hi Invisible.

The single day guide is free, the 7 day guide with EyeTV integration requires an IceTV subscription.

I&#39;m not sure why yours is showing as expired.

Please make sure you have the latest version:
http://www.icetv.com.au/cgi-bin/downloads....t_file&number=2 (http://www.icetv.com.au/cgi-bin/downloads.cgi?op=get_file&number=2)

And make sure you&#39;ve created an account:
http://www.icetv.com.au/registerwidget

I know you do have an account, but if you really can&#39;t get it working, then maybe try making a new one.

Failing that, you can reset the widget by closing it, then deleting it&#39;s preferences file:
~/Library/Preferences/widget-com.icetv.widget.plist

Please post here if that doesn&#39;t solve it.
