Im most interested about the lion update that will make calendar and address book work with iCloud. Plus all the ilife patches.

They will all be released within a few hours of each other.

You need iOS5 for the iPhone 4S.
You need iTunes 10.5 to install iOS5 on the iPhone 4
You need Lion 10.7.2 to install iTunes 10.5 because of the iCloud integration stuff.
And finally you will need All the iCloud updates for iWork, iLife and Aperture etc Which won't work until they upgrade to 10.7.2.

So its a must. Its going to be a busy few hours worth of updates.

I think all hell will break loose with iOS5 and iCloud.
I tried to switch my mrs from my AppleID to her own ( we use mine to sync / apps ) and when I changed hers over it went ballistic and deleted all her photos and deleted her address book after it had sync'd to the cloud.

So if I went to icloud to retrieve my iphone 1 backup - will it restore her's or mine on the same appleID - as the 1 ID only has 5GB of space we could only really get 2 phones on the ID. I also have an iPad on that ID. How it will all work out I have no idea.

And just when my internet has been capped for the month D:

iPhone backups include the udid or serial number or something (forget which one) icloud/itunes should work out which iphone its restoring and get the correct backup

From what i can gather the safest way to do all this is to turn off syncing on your phone (make sure that it is all backed up and up to date first).

Then sync your MobileMe details to a Mac or PC and make sure that everything is flowing in the correct direction. Then once you are happy that the data is not corrupted and there are no issues with missing or lost data, you would turn syncing back on to your phone 1 application at a time, e.g. pics, then address book etc.

This way at any point in the upgrade you can see if something is going wrong. (and hopefully stop it before its too late).

It all sounds easy enough but then again it usually never is.

Btw did you use the iCloud/move page to do the switch?
It had a tendency to work sometimes atm, still a little buggy.

Your confusing the situation.

Each of your devices are synced via wifi to your Macbook Pro when its running iTunes 10.5. This can be multiple devices at once.

Your iCloud part you seem to be confused with is your AppleID i.e. address book, bookmarks, photos etc.
When you load iOS5 onto the said device you enter your ID then it walks you through syncing your data back on wirelessly.

If you have more than one item using the same ID it will sync the same data to both or all of them (up to 5 devices). e.g. iMac, Macbook Pro, iPad, TV and iPhone would all be synced together. Think of it like "Home Sharing" in iTunes but with all your data.

You will need to upgrade to OSX 10.7.2 to use iCloud.

The 10.5 was the iTunes version number only.

11th October 2011, 07:06 PM
what about someone who is running a core duo.
I'm stuck on 10.6.8 for now.

I get that the OS will have no icloud integration. But can i get this new itunes so i can even upgrade to iOS 5?

i also remember seeing some 10.6.9 screen shot or something, so i'm holding my breath!

Steve_D
11th October 2011, 07:21 PM
Well according to the iPhone 4S page ...

Mac System Requirements

Mac computer with USB 2.0 port
OS X v10.5.8 or later
iTunes 10.5 or later (free download from Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes Now (http://www.itunes.com/download))
Apple ID (required for some features)
Internet access

So if that is anything to go by it looks like 10.5 will install on everything after iTunes 10.5.8 but some functionality such as iCloud (which is linked to OSX) will not work.

stewy38
11th October 2011, 07:33 PM
With those system requirements, can you still sync your phone & iPad using your cable connected to your computer
after you install iOS 5.

There's only a few people in the world who knows when it will be released and they all work in Cupertino.

It'll go live when it's ready to go live. After the Mobile me and iPhone 3g launch fiascos I would hazard a guess Apple is going to be sure the system can handle it before going live.

Error 3200 here. But I had not updated with the Lion Recovery update, nor 10.7.2, so I am doing that now and will try updating the phone to iOS5 afterwards.

If anyone is looking for the restore file its hidden away in the hidden Library under your user, and /iTunes/iPhone Software Update. I use Superdocker because I actually don't like the bog standard dock appearance, and part of Superdocker is a feature to show all files, and it works beautifully with Lion, even though it was not specifically designed to. No guarantees with the next version of course, and it seems it has been discontinued. I've downloaded again it to make sure I always have a copy.

Read about Superdocker in this review (http://www.iconpaper.org/superdocker-review/)

The internal error is an Apple server overload issue. If you retry and retry, it will eventually go through. if you want to make the process easier, you could delete movies/photo's from the camera roll, it makes the backup process much quicker.

I decided to bite the bullet and restore the phone instead of updating. I suppose, assuming it works, I'll have a nice clean phone to start off with. The actual download took no time at all. Updating the OS was a slow process but in the end made only one difference to updating the phone and that was that the error changed to 3002 instead of 3200. And 3002 suggested several issues, all of which I had addressed, with the exception of either starting over with the download, which I didnt want to do, or restoring. Fingers crossed.

iTunes in the Cloud is available in Oz!! Not iTunes Match tho.

By the way, you can download the ipsw for whatever device you want here: iPod, iPhone and iPad Firmware Download (http://www.felixbruns.de/iPod/firmware/)
Often this works more than iTunes when the servers are under stress.

---------- Post added at 07:49 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:45 AM ----------

You can then hold option and click update to manually locate the ipsw.

Also, for those getting it, error 3200 is iTunes getting an invalid response from Apple's OS signing server.
At the moment it is absolutely swamped and failing almost every second SHSH request it gets.
Nothing you can do to fix it :(

If you jailbreak, check to see that you aren't redirecting requests to Apple's server to Saurik's in /etc/hosts.

I havent jailbroken for a while but I suspect thats whats been happening. Anyway I opted to do it different and it worked fine.

Here's what I did, and it has worked painlessly for me, where the usual method failed.

1) Make sure you have a full backup of your phone
2) Download only. Don't bother trying to update yet.
3) Make sure you have easy access to the file downloaded by iTunes. I copied mine out from ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates to a download folder. *then* Option-Click (Mac users) and presumably Alt-Click (Windows Users) on restore, instead of update. It ought to do a full restore of the OS to your phone.
4) When your phone restarts, it will take you through setup... after that, it will restore your phone info from your backup.

I've been amused to note how much of the setup is similar to android, with settings being applied prior to even getting into the phone. That, plus the pulldown from the top. I like it. That pulldown is one of the things I have liked about the Android system.

I grabbed the file on a fast connection, but am now back out and about on the laptop on a "questionable" 3G connection. The crap tastic thing for me is that now I am spending more time in the "backup" cycle than the 1/2 a second it take each time to device the server sucks. Anyway to skip the backup step for each re-try?

Did you actually download the file first? You can't *-click restore without it. If you did, and it completed, it should be under your user, in Library/Itunes etc as I said. Maybe do a spotlight search for *ipsw

As for the second message... I am in the same boat with my iPad, the servers are quite obviously overloaded. You'd think they would learn, and either get more servers online or stagger the rollout to make it a bit easier.

Was able to get my phone out of recovery mode and running again using RecBoot (http://jaxov.com/2010/05/recboot-iphone-recovery-mode/), it's saved me so many times before. I'll try updating to iOS 5 later.

Is this the error people are getting:

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b202/Th3_H4wk/2011/ScreenShot2011-10-13at85815AM.png

Yep. As well as the ones Kerr posted above.

Best to wait until all the Americans go to sleep. It's just now gone 6:30pm New York time, the time when Americans are getting home from work to try and update their phones. For the next few hours things are just going to get worse.

Me too :(

I won't get to have a play before work it seems.

Do you have enough space on your devices? I had an error and it was the first thing I thought of, so I cleared out all my songs and the installation went without a flaw ;)

Error 3200...
Yes, 3200 was the error I got, but making space on my iPad fixed that ;)

I've found a iPhone2,1_5.0_9A334_Restore.ipsw, 701.2MB. Does a Spotlight search not look in hidden folders?

I think I need to read up on Spotlight cos it's not working as I thought it was supposed to.

Thats the file you need. Copy it out to someplace else, you'll need to tell itunes where to find it, and you might not be able to from a hidden folder

That worked ok on crappy work Dell with windoze7, notwithstabding the assorted dumbarse messages about driver failures and intallations popping up and one of the progress windows having a graphics glitch. God I hate windows, so very crappy....

But all up and running, and I'll load up the media again when I get home.

Not sure i prefer the new on/off button look, like the seperation of ipod into music and videos ala ipod touch. Very much like the volume button for the camera!

lol. People prefer to wait for the "proper release" but have all sorts of issues due to server overload,if you really wanted the update so quick why not download the GM last week.

Yeah, mine did that too... I thought about re-organising them all, but plan on starting from scratch tomorrow anyway so wont bother :P

When I plug the iPad into iTunes it says that a newer version is available 4.3.5 (as I'm still running 4.3.4). Should it be saying 5.0.0?
Do I need to load 4.3.5 in order to download 5.0.0?

EDIT: All good, just download away.

Guess I'm going to have to do a restore tonight. Lost folders, lost apps, lost content. Will a restore take me back to 4.3.5, or 5.0 but with everything as I would expect it? I guess I'll have to suck it and see.

Restores aren't tied to operating systems. A 4.3.5 backup won't take you back to 4.3.5 if you've already upgraded your iPhone.

Don't understand why people waited until it was publicly released, you could install it without a UDID since the GM a week or two ago.

It worked the first time i tried after upgrading to 10.7.2. iOS 5 is very stable and iCloud is very quick and reliable. I love it!

my iPad 2 is now bricked.

Nice.

Will hopefully try early tomorrow morning and see if it will do a restore without failing "from an unknown error"

What's with the attitude? You don't understand why people waited until iOS5 was publicly released? What a ridiculous statement. I don't even know what "you could install it without a UDID since the GM a week or two ago" means, and I don't really care. Like most people, I waited, and am kind of disappointed I didn't wait at least a few days or so.

I didn't do anything wrong. Many, many people are reporting similar things. The upgrade process is unquestionably buggy.

Wow. Under and hour to download iOS 5. And then spent the next THREE hours updating iPhone 4. Had no problems or error messages. But seriously lack of sleep for what? Twitter integration and Notification Centre. Now trying to transition from MobileMe to iCloud. Wish me luck!

My upgrade process went fine, I did a restore & update as it was jailbroken previously. Process took about 30 minutes to get to a useable iPod then another hour to dump all my crap back on it. Now I have to go and do the process all over next week when I get my iPhone.

iPad refused to restore itself from its DFU loop on my 2011 i7 imac but first attempt on the macbook air and it worked! Had a myriad of different errors.

Bizzare!

No errors, but have had difficulties moving from MobileMe to iCloud. Didn't work all last night, but just managed to migrate fine! No duplications discovered yet!

One thing about iOS5, I hate how Apple separated the iPod app into Music and Video apps. Very annoying. And I have no use for Newsstand

While I did get iOS 5 on Thursday morning, I had missing apps and folders. Did a full restore that night of my last 4.3.5 backup and everything came back sweet. Was so happy. Not overly bothered that I only have a 3GS, everything is working great. Battery life is my biggest concern but I can put up with that for another 9-12 months. The restore did take AGES though, so I used the new usage feature and deleted some of the bigger apps that I don't really need.

Would be good if they added to Settings a Show/Hide System Apps toggle, and had Compass, NewsStand, Stocks, Voice Memos, Weather in there.

Agree with the useless Apple apps. I don't use any of those and put them all in the folder. But since NewsStand is a "folder" it cannot be placed in a photo (you can, but you render it useless! So I can't be bothered). With iCloud, all my birthday events now also have an alert! How annoying! How can I turn it off without going into everyone's individual birthday "event" and turning off the alerts?

So this is a question for anyone that converted their MobileMe accounts.

I noticed something the other night and was wondering if anyone else that has seen this or its just my account/s?

When i converted the 2 accounts on a family pack membership. The first (the master) got changed to iCloud but it stays as MobileMe in the mail app (even though it registers as iCloud when you check it but with the 25GB storage.

The second account on the membership changes to iCloud and only gets the 5GB storage.

The question now is if you were to say wipe your mail account and put the master back on but re create it as an iCloud account would you loose your 25GB data, keep your 25GB and have it listed as an iCloud account or would it make no difference and stay a MobileMe listed account.

I have a feeling that its either going to be answer 2 or 3 but I'm not willing to place my bets on it atm.

Anyone game?
