Considering the release date isn't for another few days, I'd be surprised if there's any change yet.

Just spoke to Apple then. My status is "ships by October 14th", they said this means it will be shipped from China on the 14th, being received by the 18th at the earliest!

ravage221
10th October 2011, 01:19 PM
It means that it will ship BY October 14th, I would bet good money on that your iPhone leaves China (if it is even in China, Apple often stockpiles things in Sydney) tonight or tomorrow. The exact same thing happens with all of Apple's products that they prerelease. They list the shipping by date as the actual release and most of the time they ship way beforehand, putting it in line for an October 14 delivery. In fact sometimes they request that an item be held at a courier's depot until the 14th for delivery. Apple's just covering their ass.

Just saw a report from the US. Some customers getting shipped notifications.
See it coming our way soon.

Soooo you are saying that the people that were really fast with pre ordering actually could get the phone at the door on Friday the 14th? (which is how I understood apples shipping date anyway)?

Anyway looking forward :D

ravage221
10th October 2011, 01:25 PM
Everyone who ordered when it listed a ship time of By October 14th could get the phone to their door on Friday, yes.
That is a could! But it is what has happened before with Apple and I see no reason for them to change this now.

The first iPad was released on a Friday and I preordered (like I did with the 4S) and I received it on the same day as the release day. I see no reason why this won't be the case for the 4S. I doubt it will leave China on the 14th. It will be in Australia ready to be shipped and delivered on Friday. If not then that is poor form and a terrible way to treat those who preordered early. If that happens then they should really ditch the preorder process or in turn just take the pre away from preorder.

ravage221

People that ordered off Apple in the US are getting shipping notifications. It is only a matter of time.

So what is the consensus? Anyone that calls apple are told that they won't be shipped until the 14th. Anyone still expect to get it on launch day?

I would say that is Apple just covering their arses in case there is some hold up with delivery so they don't get people calling up crying (which they will anyway). As I said earlier if this happens then it is extremely poor form and I most likely will never preorder an Apple product again (yeah right - damn you Apple *shakes fist at all my Apple products*).

Shannon
11th October 2011, 04:11 PM
Yeah.. Like there isn't a whole like you can do but I would expect them to be out of China tomorrow at the latest... I think it'd be poor form for Optus to be delivering on Launch day to the first 5000 to pre-order but Apple can't deliver any on launch day to those who pre-ordered?

Will just wait and see anyways.

I was just having a browse through the iPad order status thread (http://www.mactalk.com.au/57/84904-order-status-updates-delivery-thread.html) from May last year. The preorder process was similar to this one, in that you preordered for delivery on launch day.

In the iPad's case, preorders opened on 10 May 2010, and those who got in quick got a 'Delivers by May 28' confirmation email. Orders went 'Prepared for shipment' between 23 and 25 May, depending on whether you lived in a regional or urban area, and changed to 'Shipped' between 26 and 27 May. It seems that the vast majority of the iPads were in fact delivered on 28 May as promised.

Hopefully this means the iPhone 4S will also be delivered on launch day, although I note that the iPad confirmation email did state 'Delivers by May 28th' while the iPhone 4S shows the cryptic 'Dispatches in Ships by October 14th'.

I defiantly haven't heard of anyone getting early shipments here, like a few lucky enough in the U.S and Germany..

Most likely, those lucky few in Germany and the US "shouldn't" have received their phones this early. Most likely an error on the part of the delivery service. Or...who knows...maybe strategic leaks from apple to build further excitement?

As a past pre-orderer-erer-erer, I've received all my pre orders on launch day. I'm confident, regardless of shipping notices etc, that I will receive this on launch day as expected (I ordered as soon as the preorders went live)

If we get a shipping notice tomorrow night, it doesn't mean we won't get it on Friday, unless you're living in the country.

I ordered a case from Apple when I ordered the iPhone 4S on a Friday; got the shipping notice on Monday night, received it 7am Tuesday morning.

I'm not saying that we will definitely get it on Friday or anything, but just that it's still too early to tell.

Interesting..does this mean alot of people will line up on Friday and try to get in store? or has Apple explored this avenue
and will disable canceling orders for those who's phones are shipping on Friday so they dont loose alot of pre-orders?

I'm a bit skeptical that my online order will arrive on the 14th, so I plan to visit an Apple store on Friday morning too. Worst case scenario is that I end up with two iPhones and I'll give the other iPhone to the inevitable poor soul who didn't pre-order and didn't have time to line up, but still wants it on Friday :)

*Edit: spelling

The later we receive the shipping notice, the more likely it is that we will get them after Friday. But that all depends on where they are being shipped from when we receive notification. If they are in China and we get the shipping notification tomorrow (Thursday) then there is no way we will have them on Friday. Even if we get the notification that they have shipped from China today or tonight (Wednesday) then we still probably won't get them til next week at the earliest. I'm starting to change my tune on this. Initially I thought we'd be getting them on launch day but as the week wears on and we still have no shipping notification it looks less and less likely that we will have them in hand on launch day. If, however, they are already in Oz (like the Optus post above) then I see no reason why we won't get them on launch day.

it wouldn't make sense for apple to ship so many iphones from china simulataneously

wouldn't it be mroe cost effective to stockpile them in Australia first and then ship them locally?

It’s gonna be either of the two:

1) They are going to address them and dispatch from China (like how they are doing with US pre-orders); or

2) They are going to ship them here in bulk, and get them to TNT for delivery from Apple’s local distribution hub.

And I agree, things are not looking too good at the moment.

It’s now Wednesday afternoon and the order status hasn’t changed since pre-ordering.

Just checked CC statement, and I can tell my charges for the 4S have gone through in FULL.

No update on 'ships by 14th' status though.

I have spoken to a few Apple employees on phone, all have said they are coming from China, and then being dispatched by TNT. Also, they will probably go through Sydney. Then there's customs!

I still have (some) faith my 4S will be in my hand come Friday!

You would think that they would have shipped enough from China early to fulfil a certain amount of online preorders before it changed to 1-2 weeks plus enough to stock retail outlets.

So most likely the stock is already in Australia, they are now allocating and preparing to ship from Sydney. It would be a massive fail on Apples part if they were touting a launch day of 14th Oct and pre-orders didn't get theirs on or before. That is the whole purpose of pre-orders.

joshuaba
12th October 2011, 08:51 PM
Here's hoping they're in Sydney now!

That would mean shipping notification tomorrow and delivery Friday!

Everyone at Apple I speak to says they're in China!
I'm hoping they've been told to say that so that people aren't expecting them on Friday and then bitterly disappointed if they don't show up, but very happy when they do!!!!!!!

I was checking all day to order mine right on time using the Apple Store App, but then from about 6pm to 11pm forgot all about it due to family stuff, and a long drive home so ordered at 1am on the 8th. Unfortunately my ship date is the 24th....gutted.
I ordered the 32Gb white so it might have to do with Apple manufacturing more of one phone than another eg: 16Gb Black (probably most popular), and having less for roll-out of some models. I will have to stick with my old 4G for another 10 days, and that's against my religion!

How will this make Apple look very bad, exactly? As long as it SHIPS by Oct 14th, then they've fulfilled their obligation. They never said it will ARRIVE by Oct 14th. If you wanted it by the 14th maybe you should've planned to line up at a retail store so you wouldn't have to contend with postage times.

Funny that Telstra expects some (at least) in major metro areas will get delivery from Telstra tomorrow!
But I guess Telstra has them just sitting in a depot waiting to go out already in Australia so maybe it isn't such a good comparison.

I suggest you guys just chill a little. This is pretty much the way it always goes and previously it has worked out to deliver (or attempt to deliver) on the right day. It may go wrong, but getting your knickers in a knot won't fix it. I think there is a really high chance that they will mostly be here tomorrow.

mrsmac62

I'm with you Petersracing, everyone needs to relax just a bit and let apple do what they do. Just remember if it is a late delivery (and thats and IF) all the disappointment will be completely forgotten once that little phone is in your hand.
I suggest you guys just chill a little. This is pretty much the way it always goes and previously it has worked out to deliver (or attempt to deliver) on the right day. It may go wrong, but getting your knickers in a knot won't fix it. I think there is a really high chance that they will mostly be here tomorrow.

I just had a chat to a TNT driver who was delivering something else to me. He says he's heard nothing about iPhone deliveries tomorrow, and that they're usually warned a couple of days out. He was of the understanding that there were no preorders this time around. This may of course mean nothing, but I'm starting to suspect that there's a very big difference between 'delivers by' and 'ships by'...

I ordered pretty early after the store went back on and I am still with processing status no charge on cc either. They got my money from the Apple Care...
I am in Sydney...
We need to wait and see.

Anyone who pre-ordered right on time and hasn't had their status changed yet?

The holding/auth charge disappeared from my Visa yesterday and it hasn't been charged again, and I'm still "Processing". In the Gold Coast if that helps.

yes, that's just the pre-auth dropping off after 5-6 days, as Apple haven't "pressed ok to confirm" the transaction, similar when car rental or hotel swipe your credit card as a "deposit". They're confirming the credit account is active at the time the contract is created.
transaction will be reprocessed when the device ships.

Australians are starting to see status changing to "Shipped"! There are several posts on Whirlpool confirming this. Also, my speculation was right. They are indeed shipping out from within Australia and not from China. The carrier is TNT Express and it's expected to be here by Friday!

The picture below is from someone in Sydney. There are three users who have confirmed that they have gotten confirmation E-Mails. Very stoked.

I have faith that it'll get to Aussie overnight. Whenever I order stuff, it gets from Sydney -> Auckland and in my hands by 8am the next morning. Apple will have urgent/rushed customs clearance on all this stuff for sure.

I somehow highly doubt that the online preorder batch and the batch they will sell from the Stores tomorrow morning are different batches? would make no sense. Apple has always previously delivered iphones on the release day from pre orders.

The update of the "shipped" or not if done from within australia may not update until 8-9pm tonight. Depending on system you won't even see the update before it's on the truck sometimes late tonight.

You could be right, I just hope you are not ;)

anyway, time will tell obviously.

Theres a part of me that thinks.. It's Apple.. Surely they can't make a huge stuff up this big but then the other half of me thinks that theres no way that we'll get them tomorrow. Even if we get updated to shipping tomorrow then most of us probably won't get them till Monday.

Whether or not it goes in tonights courier run is another matter - if TNT was a decent courier company anything lodged before 6pm should be next day delivery to metro areas.

It was always a gamble to pre-order given previous apple pre-order history and Friday launches. Im just glad I dont have to bother lining up at a store or wait 2 weeks to get it from a telcos online store

My iPhone 4S has shipped!!

Hey guys, here is a trick of how to find your iPhone order even if Apple hasn't sent you a shipping confirmation. First, your iPhone 4S order has to say preparing for shipment though. Apple usually ships via FedEx or UPS so in order to find your iPhone 4S shipment all you have to know if your phone number and zip code. Here's what you do:

1. Go to FedEx or UPS.com

2. Find where it says track by reference.

3. Type in the required information, primarily your phone number associated with your order.

4. You should see your shipment as long as your order status says "Preparing for Shipment"

Mine is coming UPS.

Arrived in Melb at the Depot at 5:30am this morning (13th) and it's status on the TNT website all day has been "Shipment Received At Destination Depot" despite the fact that it was delivered at 11:30am.

I'm not so sure it is that they are not allowed to tell you if you preordered early enough, I think it is a matter of that they don't know if you preordered early enough to get in the first batch and they don't want to disappoint anyone by saying if they ordered on the 7th they will get it on the 14th. I agree that the China line is what they are told to say but it could be the truth for all we know. I'm sure we'll all know more tonight if and when we get shipping notifications. Whilst that may be true, it will also be company policy that employees can't make commitments greater than the published ones. If the web site says it will ship by 14th then woe betide anyone who makes a different promise to a customer. It's called expectation management. They have delivered much faster than their commitments in the past and I for one will be expecting them to tomorrow. I still suggest you guys chill a bit.

Shipping notification received here - delivers 19/10

Reused tracking number as well - bound for somewhere in South Africa - TNT is so bad, wish apple would go back to star track express!

Bit annoying, considering apple more than likely had the ability to ship these yesterday but didn't.

Ah well, will appreciate it all the more next week

I just noticed something odd.

So far, all my Apple orders that are shipped from Sydney have a tracking number that starts with APK and link to the TNT Express website.

However, this tracking number is pure numbers, and links to the TNT.com website, not the local Australian site.

I hope this doesn't mean that it's coming from China!

Does anyone else have tracking numbers that are pure numbers? Anyone with a tracking number starting with APK?

Hmm interesting. Mine's all numbers too - 9 digits. When I click on the tracking link it takes me to TNT UK, concerning an order in Elandsfontein, South Africa. If I go to TNT Express Australia and put in my consignment number it tells me that my order doesn't exist.

If it is indeed coming from China, then Apple has managed to score their first major fail post-Jobs.

I’d rather they over-promise and under-deliver — and most certainly NOT the other way round!

3 hours until the "Ships by October 14th" is missed.
I would take the expression "ships by" to mean and be understood as "to ship before", ie. 13th, not on the 14th.

this is Apple Store Australia apple.com/au with a 133mac phone number, should be using correct english, not an american mistake.
am I wrong? or is this an americanism, note the date is in the american format of m/d.

What a gyp, talk about disappointing, would have been better queuing up at a local store than helping Apple create a headline for itself by pre-ordering.
Typical for us South Aussies, NSW can have 7 stores we can't even have one. I hope i don't sound bitter, but I feel we were used to get Apple a Newspaper headline - 1000000 pre orders signed. A fine case of Spin versus substance, Mike Rann couldn't have done better.
Delivers by the 19 th, thanks very much, yet again the faithful are conned. I could have walked to melbourne and lined up if i had of known in advance,no wonder they would'nt let you cancel, as the site would have been swamped by cancellations, feel like sending it back, ( but I won't :D ).
One positive is I can think about a plan a bit longer.

You're right. The dates are 3 October. Anyway, I did have an exclamation mark on my order details from TNT:

There are duplicate consignment numbers in the results as TNT reuses consignment numbers.
To identify your shipment please check for corresponding:
1. Reference information
2. Destination
3. Pick up date
If you are still unable to identify your consignment, please contact TNT Customer Service on 0800 100 600

So I don't really have any information besides this:

Reference XXXXXXXXXX (removed actual number)
Pick up date 13 Oct 2011
Destination BUNDOORA

Bah! Mine just updated. Shenzen.

PSA: If your tracking status shows some other country (South Africa seems to be popular) as well as a signatory and delivery date this is not your shipment. TNT reuses consignment numbers, so you're probably looking at the last time that number was used.

If it hasn't already, you will soon see a second shipment, and the following box will appear:

I still don't get how they can have shipped 1000s of phones to local stores for people to pick up at 8am, and not have phones stored locally for pre order people to get it on the release day (like every other apple product has been).

Exactly... normally I would expect the 18th - 20th to be for the people who pre ordered just a bit too late, but it would still be a date put out to everyone as they can't control who was a minute or two faster customer wise.

I guess we also have to remember that our data amount is very small compared to the many 1000s of phones they have to deliver, there could be a random grouping or a limit to the amount they can drive around with per day, so that its not only city, but also area dependent?

Brisbane here.

iPhone 4S white, 16 GB. Pre-ordered as soon as I could and my delivery date is apparently the 26th.

Tracking:

"13 Oct 2011 20:41:17 Shenzhen Shipment In Transit.
13 Oct 2011 18:30:09 Shenzhen Shipment Collected From Sender."

Sigh...

TNT tracking using the Australian TNT site is finally showing information for my consignment details. surprisingly its showing this at the moment

Status Date Time Depot
Electronically Lodged 13/10/2011 23:36 Sydney Priority

whilst the link from Apple's Order Status shows this

Date Time Location Status
13 Oct 2011 20:30:18 Shenzhen Shipment In Transit.
13 Oct 2011 19:58:02 Shenzhen Shipment Collected From Sender.

If I do the same, open up the apple link from my email, take the reference number and plots it in the Australian TNT Express site (which is what apple uses in Australia) I get this:

Status Date Time Depot
Electronically Lodged 13/10/2011 23:36 Sydney Priority

If it's really at the Sydney Depot, as the aus website says chances are high for a delivery tomorrow no?

Fuck apple... way to make things complicated and force peoples poor minds to start guessing with NO info... just to probably get disappointed ;)

if the "electronically lodged" follows something similar to my other delivery from apple earlier in the week, we might still have hope for a delivery tomorrow?

NeoRicen, the only thing I can think of is maybe the_doctor and AcesHoney just missed the first allotment and are under the "1-2 weeks delivery" rather then ships on 14th October.

No. My order confirmation is 6:43pm which is earlier than most of the people getting them before me. I am in suburban Melbourne about 12km from the CBD. I received the ships by 14th October. A friend of mine whose order confirmation was after 7:00pm and lives 2 streets away from me is slated to get theirs on the 20th.

I just tried this and got the exact same thing:

Status Date Time Depot
Electronically Lodged 13/10/2011 23:36 Sydney Priority

I think Electronically lodged might just mean the paperwork is ready for the item to come in.

I guess we'll know more tomorrow morning if the status on the Australian TNT express website changes.

Black 64gb ordered within 30 minutes still Preparing for Shipment, ships by 14th October at 12.15 on the 14th October. Hm, something's not quite right there. Someone at Apple needs to look at a calendar -- particularly after the 'available for pre-order on friday the 8th' debacle.

64gb, black, Melbourne, 7.10pm 7 Oct order

My shipment went in transit from Shenzhen at 9pm (about 15 minutes ago if local time, 3 hours if our time, I have no idea which), and WolframAlpha says a flight from Shenzhen to Sydney takes about 8 hours (how cool is that site!?). Either way, if it's flying to Sydney, it will be here by morning. I don't see why it shouldn't be able to be driven out to me by the afternoon, but we'll see.

but dont forget the items need to clear customs upon arrival here in australia, which with the strikes and all that may be a problem.. but obviously i hope they get delivered ASAP

Yup, Im still pretty sure we will see the phones tomorrow afternoon around 5pm-8pm but that's just me and how I think Apple works.

I remember my Snow Leopard disk arrived late in the afternoon after arriving down under in the morning. Not out of the question at all.

Not sure about people outside Sydney though.
