I still haven't sorted out my strange CD problem (http://forums.appletalk.com.au/index.php?act=ST&f=23&t=14119), but wanting to re-install OSX, I got hold of an external Combo drive which is housed in a parallel to USB box. I thought that I would be able to use my OSX installation disks in that drive and so format my new HD. But it won't work! In Disk Utility, running it from the Installation CD, of course, the options to erase the disk are 'greyed out'. If I try to reset the password, I get a message which reads:

The Reset Password application does not appear to be running from the installer CD.
The application will only work properly when run from the installer CD.
The Reset Password application then seems to freeze. When I click on OK, nothing happens and I have to 'Force Quit' the application.

Any clues now, please?

TIA,
Andrew

I think you're pretty much going to have to use an internally mounted drive, or a drive in a Firewire case.
