The .avi could already be H.264 but it isn't common for movie formats.

H.264 is mainly a streaming codec and XviD is generally used for movies.

Try opening the file in VLC, it's the best media player for OS X.

To answer your original question, FFmpegX will convert it to H.264.

You can try the beta of divx for mac at divx labs <http://labs.divx.com>. If it plays, then you can use the convert to iPod option in exporting.

Be aware that the codec is a *beta*, so if it screws up you machine or quicktime you were using beta software!

Toast 7 allows you to convert certain formats not supported by QuickTime 7.

Im using a PC so most of those apps are OSX but thanks

Ive converted a 700MB to mpeg4 and its only 20mb which seems a bit odd. When i dragged it to itunes it doesnt play and freezes .. Ive tried a few movies
