View Full Version : Help with Mac OS X Server: Kernel Panicking

Beau
18th June 2011, 04:30 PM
Hi there, (long time no post!)
I've currently got a Mac mini doing server duty for home, with EyeTV recording, Mail hosting and VPN hosting and all has been well previously. Unfortunately, over the last few days I've been encountering a kernel panic, sometimes up to one per day. In all cases, it seems to be 'servermgrd' that's not playing nicely. As far as I remember, there's nothing special that's been changed or is now running on the server.
For day to day running, it'll usually have iTunes, EyeTV, Transmission and EyeTV running as end user programs, with Kerio Connect, VPN, Software Update server, and a few other services running in the background.
I've provided the log from my last kernel panic in the hope someone can decode it for me.
Cheers,
Beau.

Are you running Mac OS X Server?

Are you running Mac OS X Server?

Haha, probably should've clarified in first post; yes. This is the actual Mac mini server Apple sells with the two 500GB internal drives and Mac OS X Server.

Are your drives RAID'ed? Single partition or multi??

Beau
22nd June 2011, 11:00 AM
Internal drives are RAID'ed (Mirrored), also have an external RAID attached via FireWire.

Hmm. Have you done a partition check? boot, hold down 'apple and s', ... type 'fsck -fy' at the prompt to verify & if possible it'll do a repair. if the file system check says all is ok, then it only certifies the physical partition is ok. if there was damage then you may still need to reload your OS, .. you can re-install over, that way you don't lose settings. then run software update to get you back to where you were. if you get to this stage, then good!

Oddly my Mac Mini is having a kernel tanti as well, although I upgraded the RAM from 2 to 8 GB last week so have presumed it is the cause. Did all the usual diagnostics advised and it didnt rectify the problem nor identify why, so have put it back to the way it was prior. Presumably you haven't made any changes recently?

I have been looking on line as well concerning multiple Kernel Panics on my 2006 iMac. Looks like there is a problem since installing the latest OS update, and more and more people are reporting this issue. May have to do with the VPN... My latest update is 10.6.7

Are you on 10.6.7? or newer? At work we had to change/upgrade our VPN because 10.6.7 broke it and would cause problems.

We will have to see if enough people start reporting this if it is indeed a problem with the latest update.

Back again; the server died one day with no activity whatsoever (wouldn't power up, etc) and it turned out the Logic Board had failed. After being replaced by Apple and having updated to 10.6.8, it's back on it's feet but still kernel panicking. Here's the latest one from today;

What's the best thing to do from here? It's almost kernel panicking daily now.

The first thing i'd have a look at would be remove any non-Apple kext's.

Uninstall VMWare if you are not using it (or if you can get away with not running any VMs for a while), Sophos and Soundflower.

i thought soundflower came with Os X?

i know i've seen in on my mac before, but i cant seem to see it now.
It used t be a sound output option.

actually, it really used to annoy me...

Did you get this resolved - I have had the same problem with Eyetv and OS X Server for over a year. I raised it with Elgato but they gave up and stopped replying to my emails. Just out of curiosity - how much RAM do you have?
