I have airport off and I also have file sharing off and all other sharing off in the network pane. Yet despite this there is a device called UNKNOWN-123-0-0-X.yahoo.com showing up in my finder under 'shared'

should I be worried?

thx

Where does it show up in Finder? Perhaps a screen grab showing it in it's context?

Your using mobile broadband correct?

Yes, I am using a usb mobile broadband on a G5.

It's showing up in the left column of the 'Finder' after 'Devices' and before 'Places' under 'Shared', although it's not there now.

That's usually where computers on your network show up.

Is it possible you set up some kind of cloud storage app recently?

You can also check your Finder Preferences (Command-Comma) in the Sidebar section and see what's configured there:

That might offer some hints as to why it's there - particularly if you play around with the checked items in the Shared section to see what you have to uncheck to make the item go away.

yeah connected servers was ticked. All the options in the 'shared' pane are unchecked. The item has gone away now. No I have not set up any sort of cloud storage app. I had a strange pop up window appear a few hours before this device appeared informing me that something was requesting my permission to connect (can't recall precisely) but I rejected this.

As I said, it seems to have gone away now. But judging from the responses so far it would seem to be a suspicious activity?

What is the connection of this device to my usb mobile broadband and apart from turning off my airport and having all the boxes unchecked in my 'sharing' pane, is there any other measure I should take regarding security?

That right there is your answer. I recently had a client with the same problem. Im 100% sure if you disconnect the broadband usb the "unkown device" will disappear, and come back when you reconnect. However, I have no idea why it shows up there or what its actual purpose is. I dont think its malicious, but i'd still be cautious none the less
