Default My Findings From Inside the new AppleTV Firmware (Live Updates)

So Apple just made available the .ipsw file for the new AppleTV, and the iPhone Dev Team have made available the password so we can all break into it. As I'm funnelling through all of the files, I thought I'd post here the more interesting tidbits. Who knows, I might not find anything.

New Remote for iPhone (and iPad?) Icon

Follows suit from the new iTunes icon

The Actual iOS App For the AppleTV Interface
Seems to be called "lowtide", and is the only app currently in this custom iOS build

    Runs iOS 4.1
According to the requirements for Lowtide, it needs the iOS 4.1GM

    Mobile Storage Mounter App?

Looks like the AppleTV might have support for mounting external storage (how a jailbreak would be initiated)

    Why the DVD support?

There seems to be tonnes of property list files for different types of DVDs or DVD players. Could this get external support for a DVD player?

    Eh?

    FaceTime Support?

    Hopefully more to follow...

Hm. I'm half tempted to buy one. If it can be jailbroken and it's possible to use the Magic Trackpad or Wireless Keyboard with it, it might be worth getting.

I'd buy one if it could be jailbroken.

Possible answer: Front Row plays DVDs on Macs. Those are probably just Mac optical drive types.

Ah, yep, that would probably be the answer Lots of frameworks being carried across from the iPhone, stuff like CoreTelephony which the AppleTV would clearly never need!

If you've ever wanted to know which MobileMe and Flickr accounts Apple uses in-store and on stage for the photo slideshows, here you go (visiting these accounts might bring back memories of Apple Keynote demonstrations of the slideshow feature on the different devices!):

Don't think there would be FaceTime support. That would just be there because 4.1GM supports it.

    Default DVD & other findings

Those *DVD* plists contains just IR codes of various IR controllers to be used with Apple TV. No external DVD support.

There is Lowtide.app running on iPod4,1, however, not much to look at YouTube - Lowtide on iPod4,1 #2 .

There is a com.apple.BTServer.plist in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ so it seems that Apple TV will have bluetooth.

It seems that the Facetime will be possible only using another device (iPhone/iPod Touch) through AirPlay.

Could MobileSoftwareUpdate.framework mean that Apple TV will be able to update itself without iTunes?

Now that's pretty cool, maybe installing it onto an iPad would be better? Seems to just be an iOS app signed by Apple that you could just drop into the Applications folder along with the other system apps.

Yeah, I noticed Bluetooth as well (in the bluetooth framework there's a SQLite database of hundreds of Bluetooth devices and their specs/device details)

    That's totally correct.

However what people are seeing here is potential. Just because the interface looks the same doesn't mean to say that it has to remain that way.
