Default So, what's wrong with The Killers?

When the 3GS was previewed at WWDC, one of the examples for Voice Control was to "Play Songs by the Killers". At this point on the live feed from the Mactalk cave there was general derision from those present about the choice of "The Killers".

Personally I've got their latest album and find it quiet good.

I don't pretend to understand a lot of modern music. I'm 37 and so already past it in a lot of ways (for instance, I can't stand Triple J and if I saw that guy "The Doctor" ahead of me on the road, I'd accelerate hoping to hit him). But I enjoy lots of music, and quiet enjoy The Killers "Day and Age". Others seem to think it's lame for some reason, and I'd love to know why. Whatever floats your boat in my opinion.

Generic, thoughtless and bland are three words I'd use to describe them. I've had this opinion right from their first album but it is interesting to note that they seem to be the band that music snobs are picking on at the moment for being too mainstream. As you said mitty, whatever floats your boat, but IMHO they're too much like a watered down version of Joy Division or Interpol for me.

EDIT: I should also add that at 37, you're not too old to be understanding modern music!

The laws of music snobbery dictate that mainstream music is generally bad; under the notion that if lots of people like it, it can't be good.

Personally, I've enjoyed the last 4 albums from The Killers... Can't wait for the rumored album of covers... Flowers doing 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' is a pisser...

Hot Fuss was brilliant and epitomised that new-indie sound with the cold guitars and distant atmosphere. After that they just went down hill with sam's town and that rubbish new one.

Yeah, Hot Fuss was ok, but I got so sick of hearing 'Mr Brightside' on the radio all the time, that I just couldn't listen to them anymore. I nearly bought that album, it was out at the same time as Franz Ferdinand and that whole new wave post-rock movement was starting, but The Killers felt too hollow to me, compared to Franz Ferdinand or Interpol.

'Bones' was good too, I liked the shitty synthesised horn blasts and the Russian chorus, but the album it came from didn't sit right with me.

Hearing 'Human' played 6 times a day on Absolute Radio didn't make me want to listen to their latest album.

Also, I think that Flowers chap is a bit of a twat.

I wasn't aware that The Killers or Keith Urban were the only musical choices available. :/

Granted their newer albums aren't as good as their first, Hot Fuss; I still love them.

I love The Killers too. That said, I tend to like 'bland, generic' rock as much as I enjoy innovative stuff. I don't know if I'd call the killers bland though.

Nothing wrong with them, just like some people hate Macs, some people hate the killers.

That said I was not a huge fan of their most recent album.

LOL. Well I never listen to triple J, however I have seen "JTV" and I'm afraid he just comes across as smarmy and annoying.

And, who named him "The Doctor"? As far as I'm concerned there's only one "The Doctor" and it's certainly not him

I haven't listened back to the live podcast, but I have no doubt it would've been me badmouthing them.

When We Were Young comes across as a song written for fat sixteen year old girls who want a boyfriend. Bones then seems to be the track justifying sex to those same fat sixteen year old girls. And yet, paradoxically, they still manage an undercurrent of religion that makes them seen like little nore than a glorified Christian rock band.

    Flame on!
It's what's not there that makes what's there what it is.

I only got onto them because of their song "Don't shoot me santa"

Well, I will admit that the only song I really listen to is "Human". And mostly my partner I replace the lyrics like this:

    "Are we cumin, or coriander?"

He is in a band called Frenzal Rhomb & also goes by the name Dr. Lindeman. It obviously just got shortened to The Doctor somewhere along the lines.

if you like them that's all that matters. Many people pretend their musical opinion is important, but it's not. And you can do a lot worse than the Killers.

The Killers are great, I've got all 4 of their albums. Spaceman is a hugely underrated song... people think of their latest album and automatically think "Human". Instead, they should be thinking of their second single.

They've got quite a few outstanding songs. Off the top of my head... Somebody Told Me, Mr. Brightside, Smile Like You Mean It, Bones, When You Were Young, Tranquilize, Human, Spaceman. Tempted to add Read My Mind as well.

I think they have been consistently good, and personally I thought Sam's Town (album) was as good as, if not better, than Hot Fuss.
