Default iPad 2 already available at MBK Bangkok - for a price

So I'm in Bangkok at the moment, coming home this week and had a stroll around level 4 of MBK, wondering if I would see any iPad 2s.

Well, they are all over the place. Seems to be mostly WiFi, but all models are in stock, starting from THB 29,500 (very close to AUD 1000) - obviously reflecting the cost of purchasing them in the US, transporting them to Bangkok, plus more than a little for their time.

Now, I'm usually keen on getting my hands on new toys as soon as possible, but a week out I'm not sure a several hundred dollar markup is entirely wise. Then again, I hate Apple's ultra-secrecy about preorders and delays, and the inevitably chaotic lines and wasted time on the day - again, not sure that avoiding that would be worth so much (though perhaps when you start quantifying the time wasted in a queue in terms of time you could be working, it gets closer).

So I'm thinking I'll probably pass up the temptation. What would you do, fellow Mactalkers?

WAIT! Don't waste the money for the sake of having it NOW. Think of all of the other things you could buy if you had the extra cash; apps, ipad accessories, expensive shoes, makeup, a new handbag....Well, that is what I would do with the saved money You get the drift.

Lol, no need for the caps - I'm not teetering on the edge, just posing the hypothetical.

While the bargain hunter in me would almost definitely say no for the reasons you mentioned, the time-poor parent would feel that hours wasted in an Apple queue would be better spent at home with the child, and at work paying it all off. Just saying, it did make me think twice. Were it this time last year, I may have felt differently for a variety of reasons.

I'm not a parent, but I do get the time poor bit If you were in Sydney I would offer to get you one seeing as I'm lining up anyway. Maybe that is an option though - do you know anyone else who wants one and wouldn't mind getting one for you?
I think when they do start taking online orders, as long as you got in fast, you would get it within a week or two.

Thanks trinket, you're very kind and I do appreciate the thought - I'll certainly find a way in any case.

I was just hypothetically posing the question of whether or not one would succumb to the temptation to get one early when it's right in front of you, and at what price that becomes too much.

My concern is that I'll wake up one morning and find that Apple have announced pre-orders overnight (I live in Perth), and then I'll have a 4-5 week delay in getting one. So I just don't know whether to line up in Perth, or try my luck with online ordering.

I have no doubt there are a lot of people that would pay the extra money for the sake of having something before everyone else. Consumerism does that to people I could get all sociological and psychological, but I think that would be extending my bout of procrastination too far! (I should at this moment be working on a uni assignment...)

They're more likely to start at half that price (more or less). I'd wait a week and get two for that price.

For a price difference of $400 or more... I think waiting a week or two would be the more logical choice! With the same money you could buy two...
