Default iPad at duty-free Sydney Airport

    Hi

A friend of mine is traveling from Berlin to Auckland with a stopover at Sydney. Does anyone know if the apple store at the duty-free sell ipads? It would be cheaper to buy there rather than in Berlin.

    Thanks

    Tony

Couldn't help myself so rang the Sydney Duty Free store for you.

Basically they are selling the iPad, but have no stock because as soon as they get stock it goes.

The lady said that they will not hold one for you and they do not do telephone sales. The iPad also is not listed on their website because they can't match demand reliably.

All said and done, it is simply pot luck whether they will have any when your friend passes thru, but worth checking all the same.

To find pricing just google aussie ipad prices and deduct 11%.

    Good luck

If it wasn't a stop off in Sydney, I'd say just buy one anywhere, and go to the TRS office on the way out and get the GST back.

But if the person is stopping in Sydney, couldn't they buy one there and do the TRS on the way to Auckland? Or maybe melchizedik could buy one for the friend in Sydney before s/he arrives. Something should work out there surely?

Wrong on the first count, correct on the second.

    Well, in my world, 11 - 9.09% = 10. Same as 11 / 1.1. How am I wrong?

The point was to determine the duty free price from the full Australian pricing, therefore:

Full Australian Pricing - 11% = Duty Free Price

9.09% is wrong in the context - how is it right?

I agree with soulman re: 9.09%.

ex GST: $100, inc GST: $110

    $110 / 1.1 = $100
    $110 * ( (100 - 9.09) / 100 ) = $100

    same both ways

    minus 11% would be incorrect
    $110 * ( (100 - 11) / 100 ) = $97.90

    VinumVitae's right.

    9.09% = 0.0909 != 1/1.1

    It's actually 0.0909090909090909090909... recurring.

Accountants may like to simplify and approximate, but that doesn't change the fact that it's not actually correct.

[Edit: Actually, sorry, correction now that I've RTFP - he's correct about 9.09% being wrong, but incorrect about it being 11% which is just completely off the mark. ]

Forgive me for stopping at 2 decimal places, thereby causing a small but obviously significant disturbance in the force. Clearly all those people who reckon I'm a bit obsessive don't know you. Now at least I can point them to this thread and say, "No, there is another..."

And, FWIW, the comic was not pointed at you VinumVitae. It was a light hearted dig at all of us who are actually wasting our time correcting each other.

Not at all, I'm being facetious just joining in the merry chase and further justifying your use of the XKCD - can't waste an opportunity to further waste time.

What a shame, given that I have already emailed my friends to tell them that there really is someone more irritatingly correction obsessed than me. It's times like this I am thankful that my friends are all imaginary.

Yes that coxy takes it a bit too far.

    Anyway as I was saying...

    My original post said:

To find pricing just google aussie iPad prices and deduct 11%.
Then Soulman stated 9.09% but didn't say what to do with it, hence the context. If he had said to multiply by it then it would be put in context.

    Then Ozimac mentions:

Actually, sorry, correction now that I've RTFP - he's correct about 9.09% being wrong, but incorrect about it being 11% which is just completely off the mark.
Which takes me back to my original post:

To find pricing just google aussie iPad prices and deduct 11%.
    $110 - $10 (which is 11% of the total gst inclusive price) = $100

Now if you'll excuse me, I have some dust to reaarange

    wow.

so $10 is equal to 11% of $110

that's not out of context, it's just wrong

This thread has now become a rare example of organic, carbon based recursion.
