Apple's iPad - discussion, speculation and anything else to do with it!
According to the guys at iFixIt, who just posted a tear-down of the iPad 3G, they found the sizes of the SIM cards and compared them. They came to the conclusion that it is not possible highly unlikely to cut down a SIM card, as they have different shaped gold plating on the back:
Bad luck for you importers, I'm afraid.
Edit: The wonderful tcn33 on Twitter has advised me that it is possible, and that US people have it working. Seems it is possible after all.

Uh, different shaped how? The contact area may look different, but they were designed to be backward compatible, with the same 'pin-outs' and clock-speed. Be gentle with a sander, sand the bastard down, and voila.

The contact area is larger, but it is the same shape. Fortunately, even with the larger area of metal on a regular SIM, you won't have to cut any of it to get it down to MicroSIM size:

It is possible, the chips are exactly the same. Contact area is not indicative of incomparability.

Good news!
I got my iPad 3G yesterday, and after playing with it for a bit I cut my old Telstra Next-G PrePaid Broadband SIM down to size with a pair of nail clippers!
Result: FULLY working 3G connection on iPad. Perfect.

Hey Dean,
Have you got your iPad yet?
If so, did the cut down sim work ok?

Update!!
The Vodafone sims that I used and my 3 sim WILL NOT fit. I took my AT&T sim out and had a look, the chip is too big. I saw the post above with the Telstra sim, my Optus sim in my iPhone also would fit in the iPad however none of the ones that I want to ruin would fit.
I guess I will have to wait now..
