Just call up, and ask them, "I would like to unlock my iPhone, but I am not sure which carrier it is locked to - can you check my iPhone's IMEI or serial number and tell me if it is locked to your network? Thanks!"

He'd be better off asking the seller, as such information would be tied to a customer's account and locked up under privacy legislation.

Well yeah, that's the obvious step - but sometimes the seller can't be contacted (or doesn't even know themselves).

I'm pretty sure with some carriers you need to be the person who originally bought the phone to get it unlocked. I'm pretty sure Optus works that way. So even if you find out it's locked to them, it's useless to you unless you can get the original purchaser to ring and ask for it to be unlocked, at least that's what I've heard. Other carriers may be more lenient, I think Telstra will let anyone unlock a phone as long as they're willing to fork over $150.

    yeah....
actually the most important part for me now is to know which provider it's locked to...
cause i have a friend here who can unlock any phones locked to australian telcos officially which is a very expensive service...

and one more thing, yesterday i found this site after googling
    hxxp://www.sydneyunlocking.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=10&osCsid=bpvcc70gb58 d4dn9ur0fapq3c5

    is it trustworthy site??

Only iPhones purchased from Apple directly are factory unlocked. If your seller got it from a carrier, it IS locked and it's locked to that carrier.
