looks good.worth to try it out
I've used the modem around Melbourne for the last month or so and have been very happy with connections and speed. Battery life is good. I just noticed that I had left it switched on in my bag for about four days and there was lots of juice left in the battery.
I bought the DSE 365 day 10G top-up and then phoned Virgin-Mobile for unlock code. They supplied that with no problem and I was able to apply the Card Unlock software running in Windows 7 virtual machine on Parallels 5 with no problem. There is no Mac software for unlocking.
Still very happy with the purchase. It's just so convenient to use.
Any tips on what works with charging these apart from having it plugged into my MBP.
I had it plugged into today whilst I was using it on wireless and it did not charge ( I was running on battry power though)
I have had no luck using my Belkin USB wall charger or Kensington portable USB charger.
I've only used the supplied cable and my MacBook Pro and it has charged each time with no problem. I've also charged it while on battery power to bring it back from completely flat so that works OK as well. If I'm not mistaken, the USB port on the top left of the MBP puts out more power than the one on the right. Have you tried swapping ports to see if it charges better?
Okay thanks, I will have to pay attention to what port I am using. Can you charge whilst you are using it in wireless mode or does the virgin software need to be running? The manual is very short on details.
I logged into the router and I can see the charger light indicator going although it is not actually charging..

That's better than my wired broadband

Various mac / non-mac stuff.
Just bought one of these devices.
I have it working fine as long as it is connected via the USB cable.
When I disconnect the USB cable, I am able to connect to it via Airport but I cannot get an internet connection. WHen I launch the Virgin Mobile application, it is unable to find the device (it says it is disconnected or unavailable). Trying to force connection with the button on the top right of the modem makes no difference. Accordingly, I am unable to use it as a wireless hub - very annoying.
Any suggestions?
USing this on a MBP C2D 2.16 running 10.6.2

catbert, did you resolve your issues with this?
Hi Cybix
I have exactly the same issue as described by Catbert and would really appreciate any tips if you have them on how to overcome this problem. Received the modem yesterday and after several very uninspiring interactions with Virgin tech support I can now use the device attached but not without the cord which I'm finding very frustrating. I'm running OSX 10.6.2. Would love some help if it's out there
cheers

Apparently some of the Motorola RAZR chargers with the same usb connector charge it. This Belkin Dual Auto Charger for iPod and iPhone - Apple Store (Australia) charges mine in the car.
I use this device 100% with wifi. I never ever connect it via USB. (only to charge it, with it switched off)
When I took it out of the box, I turned it on, connected to it's wifi (unsure if I had to hold down the wlan button to get wifi to turn on or not)... used the password provided (might have been the devices serial num I forget).
Once in, I browsed to http://192.168.1.1/ and logged in with the default credentials.
Checked over the settings (everything was fine already), changed my WPA password for the wifi, and re-connected on the mac.
Held down the connect button on the top right of the unit to start the connection, and away it went. I've never had any issues.
I've since topped it up with the 10G / 365day pre-pay top up from Virgin. Also rang them and got an unlock code, I've unlocked the modem, and tested it with a SIM from a different carrier, works.
So my final suggestion is to toss the stupid software and manage it completely using the WebUI.
As for charging whilst using it with wifi, I honestly haven't tried this yet. Sort of defeats the purpose of a wifi/3G router right? Plugging it in to the USB only drains the laptop battery...
I removed the cable that came with my iPhone charger last night and plugged in the MiFi usb cable and it charges it as well.
I bought this with an ipad but could only connect with the cable directly to my laptop......virgin clueless, apple saying it's incompatible........to connect you must change the WEP key to a WPA psk password then voila everything connects wirelessly - iphone, laptop and especially ipad.....
has anyone used this with an iPod Touch as a replacement for an iPhone?
iMac 27" i5 four core 2.66ghz 4GB , Macbook core 2 duo white 2.0ghz 2GB RAM, iPod 4G 40GB B&W, iMac G3 500mhz 768MB RAM 160GB HD "dalmation". lots of technology, lots of sex.
How so? Skype?
What number would you give to receive calls?
The Virgin MiFi does work with iPod touches (as with any WiFi device).
