    Default OS4 & 3G

Does anyone know when and if apple are going to release an update for the OS4 so that a regular 3G iphone is useable again? I'm so pissed off with apple, my phone was perfect before the update and now I want to smash it. Constantly crashing, every morning when the alarm goes off it reboots itself the browser is so slow it's useless.

    Major fail apple!

Take it to the Apple store.

They may not be able to help you.... but its always worth a try.

My phone is as slow as hell too.... but I am not having any of the issues you are having.

in the interim, try a hard reboot.

How to speed up your iPhone 3G running iOS4 — RoughlyDrafted Magazine

press and hold the Sleep/Wake button along with the Home button for about ten seconds, which will kill the phone and initiate a reboot.
Simply doing a normal shutdown doesn’t have any effect, as the iPhone shuts down to a disk image. In other words, it just sleeps and just puts you right back to where you were when you wake it.

Yeah, I've done several reboots and it helps for a very short while. Apple should have had some sort of disclaimer stating not to do the update if you have a 3G and not a 3GS.

I found that whilst most performance on my 3G under iOS4 has been slower, the homescreen animation has been smoother and notes now opens in only 8 seconds rather than 20 seconds. But yes, iOS4 seems like a total abortion on iPhone 3G.

I still think 3.2 was the best build for 3G's

I have to agree. I really wish I never upgraded to ios4. The phone is extremely slow and starting to bug me. It's a shame we can't go back to 3.1.

Also since upgrading to ios4, I've had issues with charging the phone. Prior to upgrading I used to charge both the phone and iPad via the iPad charger, now when I connect to the iPad charger the phone initially registers the fact that I've connected the phone, but when I come back to it, it has charged at all. However if I connect it to an phone charger then it works??? Anyone one else notice this?

    Yes same issue here Bosox.

I reboot the phone and boom, it's fully charged. I think it is a problem indicating the % of charge. It is charging, but you just don't know it (besides saying 'plugged in and charging').

I just leave mine plugged in and then give it a restart and it shows 100% battery again.

Well I downgraded mine back to 3.1.2 best thing I did, I found ios4 not worth the upgrade on my 3g, just remember if you don't have a 3.1.2 backup you won't be able to restore back any custom settings completely. In the end I just had to resync my apps and contacts etc... from itunes

I have a friend this all happened to, he ended up buying another 3G second hand. I really think Apple should replace phones that have been messed up by iOS4.
I mean, how long have we beed trusting upgrades to be workable and not been disappointed - until now? I don't think users should carry the burden of their mistakes.

A simple google search will reveal hia to revert to 3.1.2 no need to buy a new phone.

I know, I found some articles for him, but he'd wasted enough hours messing with it, and just found it easier to buy another one.

Good to know that it's unique to me, however it is very annoying. Why should we have to reboot after each charge jus t so the battery indicator is accurate. I wonder if 3GS owners have the same problem.

My iPhone 3G is actually running faster on 4.0 than it did on 3.1.3. I took a backup of my phone, performed a DFU restore and after iOS4.0 was installed I then applied my backup.

I didn't simply plug in and click "update".

I'm considering restoring & setting up as a new phone. My 3G was already painfully slow on 3.1.2 and 4.0 feels much, much worse. I actually hate using it now.

I went back to 3.1.3 on my 3G after experiencing OS4 and it has been such a relief. The phone is now usable again without the noticeable lag.

Easy Google search and rollback- just had to resync everything which is no biggy really.

No more auto updates for me.
