So what are the speeds like, for a USB modem vs. tethering. Is the modem much faster? Should I just dump it (especially now that it's completely useless for the time being)?
Which USB modem you trying to use?
I've used pre paid (white one) and the 21 (blue) USB modem with Snow Leopard.

21 did need an easy work around to get it up and running - I posted how in another thread in here.

I like the idea of tethering - and am glad it's with Telstra now - but I don't think I will get rid of my USB modem. That baby is WAY faster!!!!
And this way I can be on the net / /checking emails - and answer or make phone calls still as well. Will possibly occasionally tether though.

Default Snow Leopard and wireless and tethering

    DJY,

That's very helpful. I haven't really come here before so could you please repeat the easy workaround for the blue USB modem. Thanks Again

Was online with it all day today, worked fabulously and faster than the Telstra 3G USB Modem I had, noticeably so.

I posted it in this thread:
    http://forums.mactalk.com.au/11/7517...w-leopard.html
    which outlines what I did:

Seems the software provided (drivers) doesn't like Snow Leopard.
So you open the 3G Watcher (software that came with the modem) - unlock your SIM (if required) as normal.
Leave 3G Watcher open... but then connect via
    System Preferences, Network.

Select the HSPA modem from the list.
Insert the *99# for the phone number...
    type in Telstra.Datapack
(I selected keep modem status in Menu Bar as well for convenience)...
and connect from there... and VOILA!

Now all I do is plug in my 21Mb USB modem...
open 3G Watcher to unlock my SIM
and then using the little phone icon in the top Menu Bar - select Connect HSPA Modem

I've been using the APN telstra.wap on my NextG prepaid (old Optus-bought phone) and even after the carrier update was getting the error "To enable tethering on this account contact Telstra at 125111 or visit http://www.telstra.com", when i clicked "Set Up Internet Tethering".

Solution was to call Telstra to get them to update my account, change APN to telstra.iph, reset network settings, then enable tethering. Now i can get bigpond unmetered (don't know how i lived without it) and more importantly tethering works.

BTW, i must add to the "Telstra rules" comments. I was reading that Telstra has 7000 base stations, 85% connected to Gigabit Ethernet, while Optus and Voda have 4000 each, connected with 1E, which is apparently 2MBps according to wikipedia (though i'm not very technical so might be wrong on the latter). Good night.

Thanks Guy for the tip about changing the APN from telstra.datapack to telstra.iph

Worked a treat! Say good bye to the 3 mobile USB modem.

Ring up Telstra - 1800 iPhone and ask them to add the iPhone codes to your account. I'm not on an iPhone plan, but they were able to add the codes so I could use telstra.iph. Easy.

Thanks for that, rang Telstra and after the usual "identify yourself and be transferred" 3 times they got my datapack to work with the APN reset to telstra.iph but tethering doesnt reappear in the network settings. Phoning apple next but I suspect its rebuild time for the iphone.

Yep, rebuild required after any APN change to get the the tethering option back.

So I lose and hour because of Telstra policy on restricting tethering.

Charging for data is exactly the same, no matter what APN you use (.iph, .wap or .internet). .iph just uses a transparent proxy so you can access Telstra/BigPond content (as the iPhone has no options for proxies, so it has it's own dedicated APN. On my older handset it used telstra.wap as proxy settings could be set)

After complaining to the CEO earlier via his email link, and receiving a letter from him ( blaming apple??) I received a phone call from his office advising me the day this was enabled. Sometimes it pays to complain politely but insistently as high up the food chain as you can:laugh:

    Default Telstra :-(

My data network on my PrePaid iPhone 3gs, purchased on the 15th of January only works with Telstra.Internet and Telstra.wap (not Telstra.datapack or Telstra.iph) I want to use Telstra.iph not only so I can tether, but also so the bigpond app can tell me what my datapack usage is. I amcurrently using #100# and navigating through all the menus each time I want to check it.
Anyway, I went to the local Telstra store: [t]life in the mall of Hobart TAS and the guy said they couldn't activate Telstra.iph because Telstra is phasing it out. He even went to the point of typing it in to his terminal to get the error. He also told me that tethering isn't supported by Telstra even though it is advertised in the prepaid brocher.
He also told me that the data usage given by going system>usage is false (after I wasted $40 thinking I was under)
are the things he has said correct? If they are, it is pretty unsatisfactory..
Sorry to dig and then go off topic, I'm just so annoyed with the constant dramas I have with Telstra. Don't even get me started on how the max prepaid option is 75mb for $60 and it only lasts for 30 days with no carryover (unlike prepaid phone credit)

What happens if you change the APN to telstra.iph yourself? You can edit the APN name in Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network.

Data usage can be checked authoritatively only on the Telstra MyAccount page. I'm using the Quota app that reads and parses this site to keep tabs on my data usage. What you find under Settings -> General -> Usage is no good for monitoring your usage.

    Cheers
    Steffen.

    Default Telstra.iph

Unfortunatly this is no good. With anything other then Telstra.Internet and Telstra.wap whenever I try to access the Internet it says unable to establish cellular data network - or something along those lines. I also had the quota lite app with it set up with Telstra prepaid and it didn't work. As I understand, it will only work if it can tell information about the phone from a proxy that is only used with Telstra.iph and it needs to be activated in there system for it to work. When I first bought it .iph was the default and I had to go to Telstra after the long drama (of upgrading sim with outdated offers) and ask them why my Internet wasn't working. The guy typed in Telstra.Internet in the space and it worked, but without tethering and usage. Also i suspect my unmetred websites are actually being charged. The same thing happened to a friend at work. His default was Telstra.iph and after buying from Telstra he couldn't get the Internet working. If Telstra are going to phase it out, they should at least change it so that when someone buys an iPhone from them it works.. I believe that's terrible service
thanks for your post, using the Internet site I found I am able to check credit, but I am still annoyed that I'm not getting what I paid for...

UPDATE: turns out if I configure it, quota lite does work *doh* and also a similair program called consume. Thanks again for the heads up
