    Default Enable Tethering for Noobs

THIS HACK DOES NOT WORK IF YOU HAVE UPGRADED YOUR PHONE TO v3.1

    or idiots, such as myself...

open safari on your iphone, go to help.benm.at

and choose your carrier... the lovely person behind this site added Australian carriers within a few minutes of me asking for them on twitter...

found via the lovely Alex (Tales) on Twitter

This is fantastic! I had a iphone dev friend update my phone to 3.0 specifically to try tethering, only to find Apple had updated iTunes to prevent uploading custom carrier configs.
I've just enabled my phone on Telstra and it's working very well! (over Bluetooth)

Looks great, I'll definitely give this a go when the new firmware comes out on Wednesday. I tried on my 2.x firmware but it informed me that "Safari cannot download this file". I assume this is because I'm not on 3.0?

This is a great solution. I just did it via the instructions. Went to settings - network - internet tethering. It came up to contact OPTUS but then I tried it again and it worked. Can anyone confirm whether the data usage definitely comes off our included monthly bundled data? I noticed a few people were concerned about having possible hidden tethering charges on their next bill. Cheers!

Any ideas if this will work with the final release of 3.0 on Thursday?

The 3.0 Gold Master basically IS the final release so there's no reason to think it won't. The question now is whether Optus (and the other carriers) have any additional trickery up their sleeves to lock down and/or charge extra for tethering.

someone i spoke to just tested it on optus and now none of their internet settings work. maybe optus is trying to close the loophole.

I don't think we can infer anything from someone's Optus internet not working, it happens too often

I'm eager to try this but thinking I'll hang on until we know what Telstra will do with usage and charges, any others on Telstra and have you been able to test it and check your usage data, is there any difference to the phone itself using data?

Aww come on, laugh a little....

Then again, Push Notifications doesn't come up as an option either on 3.0GM for Touch.

A word of warning, a friend of mine on Vodafone tried this after I sent her the details. For Vodafone, you need to download both the Vodafone and Optus files, I'm not sure in which order. When she used just the Vodafone, her internet on her phone stopped working.

Well I did this trick last night and I could get it to turn on, after a while it shut itself off and sent a SMS back to optus and then when I went to turn it back on it said Please call up Optus to setup this feature. So it must be something on their end as well. I got it to work with my data card from telstra no problems at all, but not the telstra phone sim (Work) must not have data enabled.
    cheers

Wow this rocks! i am tethering too and i am very impressed with the speed..
i ran a speed test, only 419 kbps but it doesn't seem that slow.. i am very excited!

are Optus going to be able to put a stop to this when they realize everyone is doing it?

Is anyone able to confirm is this workaround works on the new 3.0 release?

I called Opturd this morning and they said tethering would not be available for another week and that is was 'seperate' data and a seperate data bundle that you would have to buy. Shit heads...
