Question Why Voice Dialing on 3GS only???

just checked out US store, can't seem to view Aus store at the moment and seems to be that Voice Dialing is only in the new phone...so does that mean its hardware and software or are apple just looking to hold a feature of two so people either buy the new iphone or upgrade from previous...???

listened to the audio feed live and thought it was a 3.0 upgrade....annoyed now, was looking forward to this....

It's because the processing power to record, analyze and process voice in real time while also running the OS, is too much for the 3G.

On current iPhone you can use an online processor app. There are a few around.
I was beta testing VoiceBox Dialer, with good results. The Australian version is built for Aussie accents.

EDIT: now released on iTunes Store

This kind of sucks considering a crappy Nokia can do it. Though I guess it's not doing all the other stuff an iphone is doing.

hmm… thanks for the info. I was a beta tester too. Were we not supposed to receive a free copy of the final release?

It's 'cause they need to convince you to upgrade somehow.

But it wasn't too much for the Google App to do voice search on the current handset.

The difference being it's a separate App that isn't system wide, takes a lot longer to process, and is only used for search.

If you've seen the demo video, the 3G S can do a hell of a lot more.

edit: that should clear up any confusion.

I'm pretty sure the voice data was sent to google and processed there in that app.

I wonder if it'd be possible that when 3.0 will be jailbroken, we'll be able to use some of the apps like voice control or video camera on the regular iPhone 3G. Performance or not.. would be interesting!

It's a good thing that Jail broken iPhones are up to the stringent performance requirements of the official software, and that they can tap into the iPod software, create genius playlists and respond in real time as to what's playing.

    wait.

Dumb question, I know, but does voice activation apply only to phone dialing or will it work for iPod functions too??

All kinds of things, dialling numbers, calling contact, playing music. You can even ask the phone what song is currently playing or tell it to play "more music like this".

Frankly I HIGHLY doubt that. Phones from 5 years ago had the capability to do voice dialing among other things while having much lesser specs than the iphone, even if it runs a more sophisticated OS.

Voice control really isn't very taxing on hardware.

I think it is purely a marketing ploy to bolster the features of the new iphone. Same thing with the limitation of video recording. The old 3g phone had no problems handling video recording when jail broken!
