Now, you may read this and go "oh, not another rumour", but this is some real, replicatatble evidence found in the iPhone SDK (3.0, beta 5).
Whenever you launch iTunes, it has a pic of your iPhone's model. This is the same as with the SDK (in Organiser). While searching for an un-related file in Spotlight, it turned up an image deep into folders called "iPhone 2,1". A quick tweet-out told me that the current iPhone's model number is 1,2, so I thought I would put my findings here.
Firstly, the folder's contents:
If you have the 3.0 beta 5 SDK installed, head to:
(info from the "Get Info" window)
Why I think the image is 100% real:
- The SDK has been known to reveal details about up-coming models, including the leaking of the magnometer in the 3.0 SDK, and the details abut the 3G chip in the 2.0 SDK
- As Apple Stated, they use exacty the same apps in-house to develop their apps and test them on their products
- There is obviously a new iPhone coming soon, so it was just a matter of time before this was found
The images of iPhone 2,1 can be found here (black) and here (white)

I think I saw something about this on MacRumors a while ago (but that may have been speculation).
Great find thoughDoubt anyone will disagree on a new iPhone coming out soon.
AKA, the iPhone 2,1 images are the same as 1,2![]()

I'd say they're probably placeholder images for the REAL look of the REAL iPhone2,1 when it does eventually come out.
Judging from the pics of the iPhone1,2, the pics of the iPhone2,1 are pretty much the same.
EDIT: Fine, beat me by a minute.
Well if you head to the latest speculation, it says that the new iPhone will retain the same form-factor, but have internal changes.
Nice find![]()

Good find.
Cool, most likely 100% true, since this happened last time and we got an early look at the iPhone 3G. Granted it was only the front, but the subtle differences were the same subtle differences we saw in the final product.
PS: Can you post the same sized image from the iPhone 3G? I can't tell from the finder screenshot you took, but I have a feeling the metal bezel is thicker on the new model.
had the same find on MR last year, turned out different

No it didn't...
EDIT: Found original story.
iPhone SDK contains a 3G iPhone icon?
Reported on 28th May 2008, so around the same time from WWDC as we are now.
The only difference between the fronts of iPhone 3G and the original iPhone was subtle, but it was a thinner metal bezel (the original extended all the way to the screen, the 3G didn't, leaving a black border between the bezel and the screen.
The iPhone 3G leaked image showed this change several months before release, and was accurate.

So much for the rumors that the metal bezel war removed.
