Default How to turn off iphone 3g data connection

    Hi guys,

A little help is needed here. I have got iphone 3g and is currently using Three as the network. I am going to Japan in a week time and am planning to use my international roaming just to receive sms and calls. I certainly do not want my data connection to be active since it will cost me a fortune remembering that data package is expensive overseas and is not included in my plan. Does anyone know on how to turn off data connection, ensuring that my iphone will not start downloading things overseas? Help would be much appreciated here.

    cheers - Astro

Settings --> General --> Network --> Data Roaming --> Off.

    Should be that by default.

Thanks for the reply mvjs. However, by turning the data roaming off, does it mean that we cannot download data when the network status shows roaming on the upper left hand corner of the iphone screen? Or does it mean that if we bring our australian simcard overseas and use the international roaming, eventhough that we have got 3G sign on the screen we will not be able to download data? Sorry for the stupid question. I just want to ensure that my iphone will not d/l data at all while I am using it overseas. Thanks a lot.

    cheers - Astro

Just change the APN to something other than 3services

Settings -> General -> Network -> Cellular Data Network and change 3services to anything. I usually change mine to 3service [no "s"] to save having to type the whole lot again when I want to turn it back on.

    A couple of findings:
    1. Turning off the data roaming function will not prevent my iphone from downloading data even when it is showing roaming status on the upper left hand corner of the screen. I think it will only prevent iphone from downloading data while in roaming mode in overseas.
    2. Best way so far to turn off edge/3g/gprs data connection is to change the APN setting into an invalid name such as astroboy or somthin.

Is there any better way of diabling data connection at all while leaving the phone fully functional?

    Cheers

I don't get any "Cellular Data Network" box? I just have the 3G setting, data roaming, VPN and Wifi?

    Using Optus.

It's not an option on a locked-to-Optus Optus phone - however, when they unlock it for you it will appear.

Telstra have this option by default (locked or unlocked to the Telstra network).

Vodafone don't have this option until you unlock your phone (from the Vodafone network) either.

My phone is unlocked, I've even made calls on it using a Telstra sim.

Weird - it's definitely supposed to be right there, under Enable 3G and above Data Roaming.

This is quite important, as I'm soon going overseas and I'm guessing I'll need to change the APN to use a different providers internet?

Is this a software problem (I did restore in iTunes after I got the unlock message)? Or is it something Optus can do on their end (should I ring them)?

    Thanks for your help

You might want to try another restore, just in case.

After that, ring Optus (good luck with that).

Alternatively, you could try the APN Changer:

Okay, just to make sure I wasn't going crazy, I stuck my old Telstra prepaid sim into the phone and tried making some calls again, which it did fine.

With the Telstra sim (edge, not 3G), I went into the settings and the cellular network data tab *was* there. But when I tried accessing Safari, it said it couldn't access the cellular network. Is this normal behavior for an (old) prepaid sim?

I just want to be sure that when I'm overseas, I'm not going to have any problems accessing the internet with a local sim card.

    Thanks
