Default Unlocking your iPhone 4 with Telstra

    For background read this thread:
How to check if Telstra unlocked my iphone 4

I have been trying to go through the unlocking process with Telstra since last week.

I rang 1800 474 663 (number given to me by @Telstra on twitter) and asked for the unlock and got the standard 5-72 hours waiting time advice. It actually took until the third person I spoke to to inform me I would need to do a full restore; earlier advice was a simply Sync should do the trick. As a previous Optus customer I was also waiting for an SMS to confirm the unlock was ready to go (I now know that Telstra do not send out that advice).

Anyway, I did the restore on the weekend which would have been well over 72 hours and there was no acknowledgement on the phone or via iTunes that unlocking was successful.

So, after reading that earlier thread, it looks like I need to assume the phone hasn't been unlocked?

Unfortunately, the only other people I know who I can easily swap out the SIM with are Telstra customers as well, so I can't really test it that way.

Well, I tried to unlock my iPhone 4 with Telstra last year. Was about the same story. Never got an iTunes screen saying the phone was unlocked. I verified it was unlocked after borrowed a friend's microSim.

Personally, I don't think the restore was necessary.

I called up 125 111, gave them the IMEI, a few hours later plugged it into iTunes and it was unlocked and ready to go.

I made the unlock request 24 hours ago and am still waiting for confirmation. Does the appearance of "sos only" when I enter my sim code upon startup indicate anything? (it then finds Telstra signal ok)

Yeah, I have a feeling that number is the best one to call.

Did you get any confirmation your phone was unlocked, or did you have to test it with another SIM to be sure?

I did this with my iPhone4 and it was unlocked within an hour.
When you restore you iPhone you need to see this message.

If you don't see this message, then your iPhone is still locked.

Thanks...I have restored twice and that message has not come up, so I will try again today.

I would try another sim if you can, you never know.

With my iphone 4 which I'm now selling, I asked for an unlock when I first bought it. I've since restored it a few times and never had the "Congratulations" message, but I've tried different SIMS and they worked fine. I wonder if there's cases where the phones aren't getting that message any more.

I requested an unlock from Telstra yesterday. No message, but I tried an Optus SIM today and it was unlocked.

I got the message after doing a restore the other day - on Optus with a 4s.

Incidentally rang Optus, waited no more than 5 mins to speak to someone, spent 2-3 mins talking through the process and was told the unlock would take no more than 5 mins. Did a restore 5 mins later and hey presto.

A shortcut to get your IME - on the keypad - star, hash,06,hash [*#06#]

    Nifty shortcut, thanks.

I think all the other Telcos do everything better than Telstra except provide an equal network. We need a Teltus.

Thanks mate. I got that screen when unlocking my old 3G from Optus.

Might try another restore and see what happens.

I called Telstra again and they confirmed I was unlocked yesterday. I confirmed this myself with another sim. They said the Congrats unlock etc message appears sometime and other times it doesn't!

I was able to test my phone with a Virgin/Optus SIM on the weekend and it worked with no problems. So I guess that means the unlock procedure did work after all.

I unlocked my old 3g 2 weeks ago. I didn't need to restore but I did need to power cycle the phone. After power cycling I plugged it into iTunes and got the congratulations message. Not sure if I clicked sync. I had tried just the sync before the power cycle with no result. I had requested the unlock about 5 days earlier.

Just for anyone who comes across this thread.
I successfully unlocked my iPhone 4 with Telstra yesterday evening using the instructions in this article.

It only took about 3 hours to go through and was easily verified without a SIM by plugging into iTunes and downloading the carrier update that was pushed through.

Just over 72 hours now for me and I'm still waiting for the carrier update to unlock it...

Do a restore of the phone then, it should pick up the unlock details when it check with the Apple database, otherwise they didn't do it properly and call them back.

1800 IPHONE is their direct number for iPhone unlocks.
