Default iPhone captive portal wifi authentication - SOLVED

I recently was challenged by putting a free wifi guest portal page where devices had to input their email address twice, agree to the terms and click login. It worked for all devices except iphone/ipad...

I researched online for a good while, found a few things about apple.com/library/test/success.html and so on...this didn't help my situation. I found that if turned off the "auto-login" feature under the wireless settings for this hotspot, it all worked fine...problem, we have over 10,000 people using the wifi across the country and we couldn't ask all of them to modify their settings to use the wifi...so sad was I...

I did a packet trace of the connections on my wifi device to see what was happening with the iphone and why it wasn't working. I found that the iphone was actually trying to access http://www.apple.com/library/test/, but additionally, it was trying to access the following URL: www.isg-apple.com.akadns.net.

I added both apple.com and www.isg-apple.com.akadns.net to my unauthenticated exceptions list and BAM! iphone worked properly with auto-login turned on and off. I then removed the entry for apple.com and left only www.isg-apple.com.akadns.net...I tested and BAM! it still worked!

I'm not sure why the iphone requires trying to do a DNS lookup prior to going to the authentication page, but it does...

I hope this helps someone. Good luck. By the way, I probably won't check back on this thread, so replying to my post will not get a response from me.

    Have a great day!
