Hi Guys,
Im new to the forum and just received ATV ver 1 this week $75 from ebay with the hack of Atv installed as well.
Without researching prior i just bought a 1TB HDD Sata, not knowing prior the Apple TV is a IDE drive.
So reading some threads im going to use DynaFlash clone of the HDD drives DynaFlash Tech » AtvCloner User Guide
Then issue is getting the cable/converter for the SATA to IDE, does anyone know
1- how many pins is the IDE drive so then i can get a suitable adapter/cable prepared is it 44 Pins?
2- recommendations/where to buy the cable-adapter Im in Sydney FYI
3- ANy hints or clues about the process.
Im yet to work it all out completely as i know with the hack i can just plug in the HDD in a enclosure via USB, but i want to make it better looking then to be cluttered with further cables.
I have seen on another forum this
Apple TV 250GB Hard Drive Upgrade Success - with instructions - MacRumors Forums and they made mention how they had a IDE/SATA flat cable but drilled a hole in it (page 3 mid way down)..
why would you drill a hole for if i go this route? is this because Unfortunately the cable is 44-pin on one side and different on the other. Apple had the cable manufacturer make some special cable for the Apple TV. thus this is why they drilled the hole in it i pressume..are there any shops selling this cable?
Sorry for being the newby but the better i understand now the better i will be prepared when the HDD SATA arrives.
So if you could kindly let me know of the cable issue and then when i do the mod i will do a thread with pics about a how to guide for all those other newbies, or ppl returning to Apple TC due to Ver 2 has no HDD.
thanks guys
This is the link that a friend and I followed.
SATA adapter for internal Apple TV drive? - MacRumors Forums
I haven't done mine yet ( usual story - other projects not enough time etc etc ) but he has and it works great.
Note that there are few adapters that work but the one that we bought is this one ...
PCM-233B-00A1E-SATA to IDE (44-pin) Converter Module
which on the previous macrumours link is the one to get also.
Also don't buy it from Avantechs Australian branch ( someone else alerted us to the fact that it cost them Au$65 and a nine week wait as opposed to the $25 plus $20 shipping we spent and three weeks post via a friend in New York )
