I've been enjoying netflix for about a month now but today my atv2 kept cycling on and off so I reset it with itunes and went through the whole process again, but now, even with the DNS set to the ones supplied by unblock-us I get an error message "you cannot watch netflix from this location" The interesting thing is I can log onto netflix with my laptop using the unblock DNS settings. My time zone is set to cupertino is that is any help. Any suggestions?

With the latest ATV update, some users may benefit to know that you can now elect to directly bill your Netflix subscription to your iTunes account. I haven't tested it, but it looks like that if you set up a US iTunes account and buy credit for it you can create a Netflix account via the ATV and not run into any potential issues with using a non-US credit card.

that's absolutely right, but the big question is whether this means they will still monitor the IP address and apply geoblocking

apple is fantastic in that they don't do the traditional geoblocking - i'm going to buy an apple tv soon and just leave it permanentaly connected to the US store - so US netflix would be an absolute bonus

Your advice has been really helpful and all has gone ok with US itunes and netflix account. Trouble is I can get no audio at all.
Movies playing away, tv shows too but no audio at all. What can I do? I would really appreciate your advice...

Is it only Netflix content that experience this issue? Perhaps try unplugging and plugging your HDMI cable again. Occasionally have this issue with one of the Blu-ray player's in the house.

I'm interested in doing this but, I've got a few questions:

    1) Is it illegal? And if so, can they find out?
    2) Would having ATV Flash (black) on the ATV help in anyway?

    1) It's a breach of contract, but no breach of the Copyright Act, which specifically allows circumvention of market segmentation devices. They can find out, but I've never been asked for my address.

    2) You can do a jailbreak yourself and save $$$. Jailbreaking will allow you to run other media centre programs.

    1) Ah right, I see.
    2) I see, what kind? Netflix seems pretty good for $8 a month.

For example, you can install XBMC and run Hulu Plus and media types not typically supported by the ATV out of the box. Check out the Firecore website.

    Thanks!

Does XBMC install over the Apple TV, or run alongside it? What about Hulu Plus too? I did check the website but I couldn't see any information about those two things.

XBMC installs alongside aTV's own software, becoming a menu option on the main screen to launch XBMC in it's own standalone environment. Hulu Plus is a plugin for XBMC, along with things like BBC iPlayer.

Oh thanks for the info. Does Hulu Plus work in Australia? Or are there necessary tricks for me to do to work around that? Hulu Plus may be a good alternative for me instead of Netflix.

Both Hulu Plus and Netflix, and iPlayer for that matter, require a VPN or DNS proxy of some type, as they're all geolocked to their country of origin. This is all discussed previously in this thread.

    What a great thread!
I was wondering if the instructions given here will also apply to the new Apple TV 3?

    Many thanks

I've found Best Buy great for buying US iTunes credit, make sure to select the digital delivery option and the code is emailed to you within 15-20 minutes.
use a FL address to avoid sales tax. 33040 is the zip for Key West FL.
I've successfully used a CBA amex card.

Agreed. I also buy them from Best Buy, they are usually delivered within 10 mins. Been finding it great to watch films that are On Demand before being released Theatrically.
