I have to say a big thanks to the OP for this, set it up last night and works a treat! I also ordered 2 more AppleTV 2's (one for the bedroom and the mother in laws house) from the Refurb store.
Cheers Daniel

Oooh...thanks for that!
Not sure why I waited so long. Brilliant work Steeley.
Though I'm a little confused about bandwidth consumption. Watched an hour long doco and two feature films so far and only seem to have consumed about 40 Mb, any comments?

yep content seems to be very well optimised for streaming.
I watch at least 1 hour long show / movie etc 20 days a month. Lucky if it adds 10GB to my monthly usage
Slightly off topic.
Has anyone else noticed the slight sound glitching when streaming content?.
It was working fine until the last update, now every say 10 mins it is like it runs out of buffer or something and then has a pause in the sound. the video keeps playing like normal.
Strange because it was working so well until this.

That would be because you were probably getting the HD versions.
which if thats the case then its not too bad.
One of the benefits to being on TPG unlimited is the use of streamed content
It may not be super fast but its super consistent.
Ok thanks for this post, im going through the processes now, and quick question from the unblockus address UnblockUs Inc. - Knowledgebase - Setting up AppleTV
Doing a check before i go home this arvo to do this, When it asks to place in your region- Well given we are in AUS do we choose North America then? As in its really asking us what area are we wanting unblocked correct?
With these streams are they saved anywhere for future viewing? or say i watch /stream Batman, everytime i watch this it is being streamed and chewing into my data then, are there any hacks to save the streams?
I just got my Apple TV Ver 1 with the atv flash installed yesterday so im new to it all, as i also just bought a 1TB HDD to install into ATV, will do a simple HDD copy from the 40gb-1TB. any info i should know prior.
If you read what it actually asks it says where ARE YOU located, not where do you want to be located.
So you would choose AUS. it should give you a DNS of something like 111.118.175.056 or similar.
Next part is simple. Its a stream. meaning that it will cache a small amount of data to stop jittering and the likes but overall you will have to download the content all over again (or at least the section you are watching at the time) if you are stopping and starting the episode.
If you are planning on using this on your TV1 then you have the benefit of having a HD inside and thus can store some information..eg itunes files etc. but not the streams. I think the thing you are actually looking for if that is the case is a torrent file and this thread isnt gonna help out when it comes to that sorta thing.
As for the HDD upgrade just follow this link...

its old but it will cover what you need to do.
Cheers, i wasnt sure, hence asking. thanks for the info. As the guy i bought if rrom in the US had streams saved, and movies are placed everywhere and thus trying to work out whats what, as a fair few tv shows were saved, that i have worked out he bought and thus can be watched, but not downloaded and watched on my account due to diff itunes accounts etc.
I just tried the netflix registration for the 1 month free but the picture doesnt load up, so i assume this is where i have to have the DNS address change done prior to signing up for the netflix.
not that I know of. It needs silverlight (in a hacked version) and there is some debate about ATV1 having enough processing power for silverlight.
Hey for 99 bucks, get an ATV2. Thats what I did

i wanted ATV1 due to it having a HDD, i have like 300gb on itunes and sick of cables to my mac or laptop etc for itunes, thus easier having this hooked up to plasma/amp. i paid only $75 for it anyhow.
A update for others for the HDD clone issue DynaFlash Tech » AtvCloner User Guide
and i will report back tonight about netflix on ATV1
Ok update-i never knew about the silverlight patch issue for ATV ver 1, so correct cannot be used for ATV Ver 1, nor any mac without a Intel chip within. Even my older imac cant use netflix.
However thats what my PS3 was for, i changed the domain for the PS3 and netflix here i am..so Same deal for the xbox/wii etc.
So a more relevant question- why can we not just get anyones/any business from the US ( say someone on the forum even) their Primary DNS/Secondary DNS number?
As us all paying $5 a month for 1 company selling their internet DNS address that costs what $10-20 a month at a guess for them but they profit hundreds if not thousands a month. Like really anyone in Australia can get a internet connection for as cheap as $20, So what am i missing here? As im going to the US soon, maybe i just set up a account over there, say I buy some internet wireless plan and then i will never use it but i have the DNS number available. Or whats stopping us from getting some hotel/resort DNS number and using that.
Im just trying to find out how to make it easier/cheaper for all involved. Cause imagine 1 person gets a USA internet plan ($20 a month dsl $5 dial up) and say 20 ppl on here put in $1 a month (prepay for 1 year $12) its a lot cheaper for all involved, and there are a lot more then 20 of us doing this hack. Is there a issue if it was a dial up contract? as all we want is the DNS numbers right?
Just thought of throwing it out there, and to be told how this cannot work then?
BTW thanks for this post, this is the best post by far this year i have found![]()
