Hardware that goes with your Mac, like external HDDs, TV tuners, HTPCs, monitors and other accessories. Includes AppleTV, AirPort and Time Capsule.
Buying a used ATV 40g and want to upgrade with a 320 or 500g drive.
I see the drive is a WD Scorpio and is blue I think, but is the interface I need a Sata or some other?
and can the atv take a 500g drive?
Appreciate some advice Guys.
Thanks

Never underestimate...what your mind can tell you!
Its IDE (PATA), not SATA.
What type of hard drive does the Apple TV use? Can it be upgraded? @ EveryMac.com
It seems like a complex process to do it. Why don't you just hack it and plug in a 500GB external drive?

Well its one more 'Bit of stuff' to look at and from what I can see its just a few screws holding the drive in place, plus I would have thought the non usb would be faster.
So seems an easy drive swap and then a re flash 20 mins to do?

I don't think its just a straight drive swap. I think you have to change config files or similar.

I would seriously question the hassle involved with a HDD swap out. The easier and cheaper option would be to use ATV flash and use a external USB drive.
It will also open up many more possibilities for your ATV.
Good luck

agree. The Apple TV basically is shite without the software hack. It's really only useful as an airtunes device and for watching trailers without the hack(s)

Ok well this is what I have now done...after having the shits scared out of me by most of you! :-) I dumped the idea of a cheap 40g and hard drive upgrade and went and purchased a new 160g from Mac Worx in Joondalup. Apple store had a refurbished for $275 1/2 and hour before I made my decision, got to the site and lo and behold of course...NO refurbished left! lol
Any way got my new one home eagerly started set up and Mmmm cant seem to get it to accept a connection to my Wireless. Bugger it I so much wanted to play with it last night.
Craig I took your point regards atv flash and got that downloaded. Now all I need is to find out why I cant get the atv to connect to my network.
I will make a sep post in a moment for that. BUT if anyone right now has some ideas to throw in it would be appreciated or a Perth Members who is happy to take a phone call! Hi Craig :-)

Craig , if you don't get the answers you are after here ( which would surprise me given the amount of forum members here who own an Apple TV ) then head on over to the Apple Discussion forums ...

You could try network cable it in the interim until you can work out what the problem is.

Good Idea Mission Man but the router and phone point is miles away from the tv point.
I did manage to find the remote button set for making the atv re set diagnose or go back to factory settings.
Did the return to factory settings and still had problem, the atv saying I had Ethernet problems.' I dont even have a cable plugged in, so why its saying that I don't know.
Have had one person tell me they could not for the life of them get there ATV to connect to the Wlan so they used the direct Ethernet got it set up and then for some reason after that the wireless worked!
So seems I either get 25 mtr of cable or somehow Drag a BIG flat screen to the router!
or go bak to the mac shop and tell em I shouldn't have to be having the problem in the first place give me another one! It has I must say taken the fun out of it all now :-(

Bloody Hell I have got it done.
After all the things i did in trying, what did it was simply changing the wireless channel number from 6 to 10 and Bingo direct connection right away :-)
Now to play :-)![]()

I just swapped the HDD its like a 15 min job now with this software
ATVcloner
DynaFlash Tech AtvCloner User Guide
I bought a 320gb WD blue 5200 RPM IDE 2.5'' HDD $120
remove old (40/160 PATA\IDE) ATV HDD
stick in old ATV HDD into PATA\IDE 2.5'' USB case
plug into mac
load up ATVcloner
dump files off old ATV HDD to Mac HDD
remove old ATV HDD from USB case
place new PATA\IDE 2/5'' HDD into usb case
run ATVcloner
partition new disk and dump software onto new disk
stick new HDD into apple TV boot up and enjoy your 300gb of space
edit: my only issue is that i destroyed the rubber on the bottom of the ATV
i guess being 3 years old and due the amount of heat these output the
rubber just became brittle and cracked
no big deal probably better with it off and the holes opened up to let more air in
