Default Apple TV and DTS 5.1 for movies

    Howdy all,

Does anyone know of a way to convert movies that have DTS 5.1 such that they playback on the Apple TV with the DTS 5.1 audio intact rather than converting the audio down.

I have downloaded dts 5.1 audio that plays back on the apple tv through the optical output into the amp which does the decoding. But I don't know how to convert dvd's so that I can capture the DTS audio goodness..

I was watching Quantum of Solace the other night and the DTS 5.1 sounds sooo much better..

    Cheers,
    J2nd.

No, not as far as I can tell. It converts it to AC3, which sounds like regular 5.1 to me..

QofS is incredible. The last scene of the movie, I don't think I have seen a more steely eyed Bond.. frightening! Daniel Craig's a winner I reckon.

You could try Fairmount. It's a freebie as well - it mounts the disk as a bundle so you can copy the contents (as long as you have VLC) - from that you might be able to get to the dts goodness.

Though I *think* that MTR also let you grab dts audio from a dvd.

Handbrake can't embed DTS into a M4V file. it can embed AC3 however.

I had some MKV files with DTS 5.1 in them, and found a script that converts the DTS to AC3.

Given that you have a DVD not MKV I would guess this is the required steps:

Extract audio and video streams (i.e. a m2v and dts file) using something like MTR.

Use the following tools to convert DTS to AC3:

libdca - DTS to WAV decoder - VideoLAN developers - libdca
aften - WAV to AC3 encoder - Aften: A/52 audio encoder
basically once these tools are installed, you'd run this command in terminal:
    Code:
     dcadec -o wavall /path/to/file.dts | aften - /path/to/save.ac3
Use ffmpegX or similar to mux the m2v and ac3 file into a VOB.

Open in Handbrake and use the AppleTV preset.

It's by no means simple, and it took me a little while (stuffing around, not actual compile time)to get libdca and aften compiled on my G5 PowerMac.
For one thing I think you'll need to install CMake for one of them.. I don't remember which..

I haven't done it on my MBP so I don't know if it's easier on Intel (there may be pre-built binaries).

    Thanks Pengu!

I'll give it ago. Does the conversion mean that the DTS loses quality. I am looking for a way to keep the DTS in its original sample rate as it sounds so much better than normal 5.1

    Thanks!

i'm not entirely sure. the VLC page for libdca says this:

QoS is a terrible film compared to Casino Royale. It rated poorly with James Bond fans and in the box office in comparison to CR (which was incredibly important as it was the true return of the James Bond franchise to fine form. What I found most disappointing with QoS was that it was even further away from what a James Bond film is all about, it was just simply another action movie with a weak script and boring villain.

Check out the new edition of Casino Royale on blu-ray, that sounds incredible..
Also, check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang on blu-ray

P.S for James Bond fans, this is out now in America.. (not sure if it's available here yet)

James Bond Blu-ray Collection Three-Pack, Vol. 3 (Moonraker/ The World is Not Enough / Goldfinger) [Blu-ray]

The World Is Not Enough would be incredible on Blu.

When i first saw QoS, I immediately thought of the simpsons episode Co-Dependent's Day, where they parody Star Wars with Cosmic Wars, and it's all about legislature etc.

Since when has a Bond baddie's MO been to make a profit by simply running a business at higher costs than others? Will Sol Trujillo be the next Bond Baddie!?

    Haha, yes exactly!

Just imagine the various Tel$tra hidden advertising including a scene where James Bond has a teenage daughter who does nothing but use her MacBook with a Tel$tra usb modem in her bedroom, the wife that sits there using the home phone to call her Mum all night, while Bond relaxes watching Foxtel. The villain being Optus, but advertising well priced plans for iPhone 3G customers, only to be found to be providing an inadequate service with terrible 3G coverage. Gasp! What a twist! (M. Night style).

Will be interesting to see what the quality of the transfer is like for the BD versions of those old bond flicks... Looking forward to picking up some box sets when the studio's get their act together.
