Discussion & troubleshooting on MacBook and MacBook Pro, iBook and PowerBook. Maybe the Duo if you're stuck in the past.
I have a white MacBook;
Model Identifier: MacBook4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 3 MB
Memory: 2 GB
It is starting to crack to the left of the trackpad where the top part meets the outside case.
I am still under warranty, should I wait as long as I can to have it replaced in the hope of getting a new version?
They will just replace the case. You won't get a new MacBook.
mine did the same thing, took it to MacMedic they just replaced the top case. Apple don't replace machine. its not very economical :P

Yeah, you're probably right, just being hopeful I guess![]()
it happens to every plastic macbook eventually… that's why I went back to the 12" PowerBook.
Apple *finally* fixed it by going to this new metal thing… although thanks to the au$ they're quite a bit more expensive.
Apple will replace the top case for free (even if your out of warrantee) as it's a known fault with the plastic macbooks.
It's happened 5 times in my family (3 out of 4 MacBooks)
Replaced every time under warranty

sold Final Cut Express to Silver.
bought a random PC serial cable from Simo.
Yep just take it to get repaired they will fix it, it's a known issue.

Mine happened last week, getting fixed under warranty when part arrives. No biggie.
What do you guys mean when you say top case?
Mine is cracking on the external shiny part (extrnal case) where it meeds the matte part or palm rest to the left of the tack pad. Its actually cracked all the way from the front left corner to the indent in the middle.
Is this what you mean?
Cheers!
I just noticed that this has happened to my wife's 6 month old macbook too. Is this problem endemic to all macbook models or just particular ones? I've read elsewhere that because its a 'known issue' apple will fix even if the macbook is out of warranty but can anyone confirm this? I'm thinking of replacing my recently deceased ibook g4 (which never cracked) with a new white macbook but this is somewhat discouraging.
Thanks.
I went to Nextbyte yesterday with my Macbook, got the part ordered they rang up today and I'll probably take it back up there next Tuesday/Wednesday
Is there a Repair Program for this, or are Apple just fixing them on the sly?
