Default Powerbook to router - Ethernet cable/setup question

I wish to connect our Powerbook G4 to our wireless router (Billion 7300G) through an ethernet cable to update the router's firmware. The cable I have, I believe, is the correct cable (its a 2 meter long yellow cable with E119932-3 RJ AWM 2835 60°c VW-1 LL84201 CSA FT1 ETL VERIFIED CAT.5 UTP TIA/EIA-568B.2 CM 4PR - whatever all that means?) but when I go into System Preferences > Network it says for 'Built-In-Ethernet' Not Connected - Status: Cable Unplugged even though I have the cable plugged in. So what do I need to do to set things up correctly?

Hi, the cable sounds like a pretty standard Cat5 cable but there's every chance it could be a dud so if you have access to another cable I'd try that.
