G'day,
After yesterday getting a letter from Centrelink saying my wife's parenting payments had been cancelled because she hadn't reported her income, despite being told we didn't need to report for her because shes returning to full time study next year, and then (yet another) call to Centrelink to kick them up the arse, we're now getting backpay, which has made us feel rich enough to actually decide to buy each other Christmas presents for the first time in 5 years.
Or rather, we decided to buy a Wii, seems historically I'm a Nintendo boy, and she always says - Oooh I want a Wii - every time she sees the ads for one.
So... Where should we buy one? They have the basic kit (Wii, controller, sports game pak) at Kmart at the moment for $359... Is that good? (Supposedly $40 discount)
What are some good games for the Wii? The missus likes adventure games... the Marioland kinda thing... on the N64 we had the Donald Duck one, Mario 64, one with a dragon that ferries you around... I'd like something more... Halo-ish... combatty...
Am really out of touch with the gaming market...
Cheers

PS Am in Brissie... if that makes a diff
Your wife seems to be like my girlfriend. I got her a Wii (and me too, but if it wasn't for her, I doubt I'd own one), and she loves the damn thing.
Her favourite games on it have been Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Galaxy. Get those two games and you're set for a few months!
Price wise, that's as cheap as it's going to get for a Wii. Snap it up now while they're stock. The closer it gets to Christmas the lower supplies will get.
I write a lot of shit here: http://anthonywrites.posterous.com
if she likes adventure games get super mario galaxy for sure
zelda twighlight princess is right up there as well

dont forget to prey on the misfortune of others - hockshops. My sister owns a hock shop, they by the wiis at 120 and sell them for $250, lucky me has his name down for the next one thats comes in and i get them at cost
I just bought one for my son from Kmart & I don't think you will get a new one for a better price.
Cool, will have to duck back down to Kmart tomorrow and pick one up.
What about "add ons" to the basic box? I gather it only has 1 of the wireless controllers, and 1 corded controller - and you need both to play? (ie each person?)
So... I straight away need to add an extra... $100? to get another pair of controllers so we can play against each other?
Another game you might consider getting for yourself is Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.
Yes the nunchuck (corded controller) is just an add on for the main wiimote. It depends on the game whether or not you need it.
If you want a second controller the more popular option is to get Wii Play. You get an controller and a game (collection of mini games). You do though have to buy the nunchuck separately.

Wohoo, even better... still technically need to look at the budget to make sure we'll have enough money to.. you know... eat n stuff.. but it would be nice to actually have something "special" at the moment... other than our 8 week old son... and a piece of paper that says I can do multi coloured finger painting...
If there information on this page is true, you might find it difficult to source one.

Um...I can walk into Hardley Normal at Indro, Oxley and the valley and buy 20 wiimotes, nunchucks etc if I wish. That's not including the EB Games stores along the way. I'm calling bullshit on that post.
If you buy a modded Wii, you can play pirated games downloaded off the net if you have a very specific model of dvd burner. You also then can't update your Wii when updates come out, because Nintendo do their utmost to disable modded Wii's.
U'd be better off not getting the Wii Modded, like thatfilthysspringbok said it doesnt allow you to update your software.
One thing thats good about the modchip, it allows you to play DVD's on your Wii and of course gets rid of that region bullshit.
Piracy is a no no.. dont do itEspecially for Wii, its got potential.
Um... so... the Wii can in theory be used as a DVD player, via a Mod... Why the hell don't they just enable it like with the Playstation? (Yeah, they try sell you a remote control first, but still)
I'm happy not to worry about modding. Just wondered what the proscons were.
BigW's website confirms the $348 price... will have to call around tomorrow and see which store/s have one nearby.
Yeah... I paid $78 for an AWA dvd player earlier this year... and although it's a POS, it plays heaps of formats, so isn't all bad.
On another Wii Q... Does Wii do networking? ie like Xbox's Halo? If so, how?
if you wanna get cheap games go to www.play-asia.com
i can give you some discount codes if ya like.
watch out for the region on the games though but it tells you whetther or not it will work.
i heard that nintendo were meant to be releasing the plug-in to allow dvd playback?
