Default Canberra WiFi - free access points

    Ok all

I did a few searches and found three threads asking for or listing Melb WiFI, then other threads for Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide... some with good Titles, others less obvious.

So I thought I might be pro active to start a Canberra thread, with a clear title, so that we might avoid people in the future starting multiple threads... whilst creating information for MacTalk users.

The WiFi list in the Whirlpool wiki didn't have ACT or Canberra, and a few of the Google searches I have done have resulted in out of date, or overseas websites.

Ok so I can keep this initial post updated, and then maybe even come up with a generic sticky (with moderator assistance of course) that could then list the relevant threads for WiFi information in the various locations around the country, much like some of the "Read This First" info threads at Whirlpool.

    Ok so Free Canberra WIFI:

    Qantas Club - Canberra Airport
National Library - Parkes (just have to become a free library member)
Cafe Del Marco - Dickson Shopping Centre
    All Bar Nun - O'Connor
Belconnen Mall outside Jamaican Blue (TBC - still pending confirmation)

    Civic
Old part of Canberra Centre (Mall end) outside Country Road?

These next three might all be in the same area?
City Deli (Canberra Centre) - well free for patrons (password provided by staff)
Muffin Break (Canberra Centre) - opposite City Deli
Canberra Centre - Gourmet City opposite Supabarn and Bakers Delight (with any purchase)
    Northbourne Ave (various)

As people post free WiFi hotspots - I'll update this first post to make it easy for future searches / members. Who knows of other locations?
mulitple iOS devices - iPhone, iPad Air, and iPod nano
    Mac OS X
    - 13 MacBook Pro with Retina, Mac mini for media server, and a Mac Book Air here somewhere still too

City Deli in the new part of the Canberra Centre has wifi and I'm pretty sure its free but you have to be in the know. From memory they had a little sign near the coffee section advertising it. Normally I'd just check with my son as he works there, but he's OS at the moment. I'll check next time I'm in there.

I'm thinking of getting an iPod Touch so knowing where the wifi hotspots are around town would be would be handy.

The pancake parlour in Civic used to have free wifi with any purchase (I think even a coffee used to be enough). Pretty sure it's still available.

    Thanks for checking merganser...
    and thanks Kirium.

I'm keen for the thread to be an "actual", current, and confirmed free WiFI thread - so checking on current status is muchly appreciated!

It's amazing how many Wi-Fi networks are available around town. I've been walking around with my Touch scanning for networks, but have yet to find any free ones in busy areas.

I think it's tied to a purchase, but you buy a coffee and they tell you how to get on......so not exactly 'free' ...I guess...unless you buy a coffee and then come back later to leech the bandwidth

Borrow an ANU login and you'll get free wifi in 100 different places accross campus. Its great to sit on the grass in Union court and check facebook (academic interest only). Prob doesn't count cause its restricted to the 15000 canberrans that would have an anu id

alot of them yes - that's why I thought if / when we discover free WiFi - collating them all is a good idea! Like Cafe Del Marco in Dickson!

When I discovered they had Wifi it made me go back!
Oh yeah the food and coffee was good too!

Was in Civic today with my Touch - and Starbucks seems to be the usual Helstra one - which required money?

I did find a free spot though upstairs in Canberra Centre connecting to "Coltaine"?
Standing outside Country Road was able to surf the net!
Was amazed how may WiFi networks it discovered wandering around though - just a shame they are all locked!

OK, City Deli in the Canberra Centre have wifi for "free" in the buy a cup of coffee and get free access sense of "free". Hey, they have great coffee, especially the organic coffee they do.

Just ask for the password at the cofffee counter. There was someone using it this morning and the staff member who set up the network was helping her. I'm getting a Touch in a weeks time so I'll give it a try from there when I get a chance.

Wandered around Civic with my Touch a few days ago. Found a free spot as mentioned earlier near Country Road. Every other network located seemed to be locked.
The Starbucks ones are locked as far as I am aware, and as it's Telstra I would stay well clear anyway

Where is the City Deli mentioned? That teh one downstairs opposite Supabarn?

Just been to Belconnen Mall to see if Gloria Jeans had an Optus wifi. No luck, but did pick up a couple of very weak signals. Didn't have time to see if I could hunt out a better spot.

Just helping to bump this useful thread.

just to confirm an earlier post, Gourmet City opposite supabarn and bakers delight in the new part of the Canberra centre has free access after a purchase. There's also an open hotspot in the area called clink that has idstrength signal, maybe from the Dick Smith area.
You can tell I have a few days off work

Forgot to add the coffee is 4 out of 5, and i'm real fussy about my coffee.

Great Thread, maybe we should have a I'll open my wireless to the world day in Canberra so all you new iPod touch owners can wander around.

I'm not located anywhere fun though..

With the increase of residential in some of the town centres WiFi might get better.

thanks for a great thread Jimbo
