    Default ABC3 4 Kids

    G'day,

    http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599...80-421,00.html

Sounds good, though already people are saying "didn't we already try that earlier this decade?"

No word yet though on the major factor - how much is the Govt actually going to invest in this new public station...

Haha, yeah, I'm one of those people who heard about ABC3 and thought 'hey, didn't they already do that and fail?'

ABC2 used to be ABC Kids and Fly TV. Kids was in the morning, Fly was at night. But this was in 2001, when next to nobody had digital TV, and ABC didn't even have any extra money to keep the 2 channels alive. Of course, the government didn't boost the funding for digital TV, so the channels were turned off.

And now they're going to try it again. I'm hoping it will be a little more successful this time around. I'd still like them to do more with ABC2, though.

Last paragraph makes it sound like it'll mainly be repeats. Though if the kids haven't seen 'em yet, I guess that ain't too bad.

You mean on regular ABC TV? That shouldn't be going anywhere. This new channel is just going to be an extra service, with more kids programming than they can fit on ABC TV.

abc kids on abc i the morning...then when that finishes abc kids on abc2 then when that finishes its abc kids on abc in the afternoon. I'd say someone there has a wife/husband at home all day...a dedicated abc kids chanel would get a big thumbs up from me

well considering abc2 is just repeats (mostly) i dont see the huge deal in having another ABC channel.

please ABC, fill it with new original content in normal timeslots, give us a reason to give it more than a second's notice (i realise there are exclusive concerts and shows like good game on ABC2 but theyre pearls in an otherwise grey and lifeless sea of repeated mucus)

This is good, we are seeing more adoption of digital channels, even if some content is repeats. More digital channels is good

Well, this new channel is for kids, so I'm guessing only C or PG rating shows.

"ABC for Kids" currently airing on the normal ABC is just basically a blanket name given to the "C" time periods. "C" being Childens television, which was created in about 1980.

Looking at the UK, with BBC Gold, BBC2 etc, they seem to do a lot of repeating as well. Fact is, they can't afford to fill another channel with entirely new content. That would be MASSIVE.

But, it should lead to changes in programming on ABC - ie less repeats there, as they'll have ABC2 and ABC3 to do the repeats, and thus more first-runs on ABC.

Why would anyone let their kids watch "kid-friendly" TV 6am till 9pm???

Whatever is on ABC now (before school, and after school) is surely more than enough.

Go out into the backyard and play with the kids outdoors!!

Aladdin - It's good for during school holidays, and when Mum needs a break and goes to hide in the laundry. I dont let my kids watch tv all day - but it is a lifesaver when i have 3 kids at home for 2 weeks!

I don't think people are actually going to have their kids watching tv from 6am to 9pm... The point of the channel is to have a full day of programming for kids - the choice of when to let the kids watch TV is there, rather than locking it to 4 hours in the morning, and a couple more in the afternoon.

I was never allowed to watch morning TV until I'd had breakfast and got ready for school. That usually meant I got to watch 15 minutes per morning, because I was so damn slow at getting ready.

Oh, that was unless My Pet Monster was on. Man, I loved that cartoon:o.
