    Default Geelong ISPs/Phone Cos

    G'day,

Bell Post Hill, outer suburb of Geelong... ADSL1 or wireless internet...

The connection mob who are putting on my power/water/gas suggested Optus wireless ("3.6 mbps"), 32GB (16GB on/off) for $60/month, plus Optus Home Wireless Phone for $30/month... $90/month total.

Optus themselves when contacted directly tried to sell me 16GB wireless for $79/month, though I'd allegedly get $20 off per month for booking online... (no confirmation of this on their website however) and no indication that the dongle does home phone in any way shape or form, despite assurances from the (online) sales person.

iiNet offered 40GB (20/20) of ADSL1 1500 kbps plus a land line for about $69/month...

What are people using in the non metro Geelong areas?

    cheers

TransACT (who recently bought nCable) is offering some pretty good bundles when you consider that you are getting cable Internet for that (ie. ADSL2+ speeds at a minimum) and their network does cover all over Bell Post Hill.

For example: 100GB @40Mbps/10Mbps (bits, not bytes) + phone, $70 p/m. There is also a 10GB bundles for $50 p/m. You can add $10 or $30 onto those for unlimited local or unlimited local and national calls respectively.

Anyway, just because it is such a better offering than 3G/ADSL1, I would consider it. I personally use an incredible amount of bandwidth per month and need higher speeds for daily backups to the US of project files so pretty much have their 100Mbits/40Mbits plan and it is AMAZING!

TransACT is now owned by iiNet to my knowledge.

I'm with Transact as well, have been for a while. Good speed and reliability. When I was looking it was a good way to go due to no line rental (especially for us as we didn't want a home phone).

Maybe you should check out Broadband Choice on Whirlpool for a comprehensive list of plans available to you.

    They're still operating independently, however.

TransACT is a very good service, unfortunately that may mean we Canberra users may be late to the NBN.

Thanks. Will check them out. Was used to cable broadband, so hate to think of ADSL1/3G...

    Long time no see/hear.
We currently have an iinet 3G dongle which uses the Optus network.
Have to say it sucks. Can't even watch 240p YouTube.
I'm 9km from the exchange so have no choice.
I'd get the ADSL1. 3G dongles on optus network are useless.

If you get ADSL with iinet remember stuff like iview and iTunes is unmetered. With the 3G dongle everything is metered.
    Something about Jimby.

TransACT's website didn't like Bell Post Hill, so I left my details for a sales person to call me and discuss... no reply as yet... (27 hrs ago... will make a decision either way in the next 48 hours... so they better get a move on)

Hey leon... How's the TAM, wife, and first born... (in that order of course )

I can get it to find a bunch of random addresses in Bell Post Hill (eg Jedda St, Ward St, Kansas Ave, Edison Rd). All list with cable available.

Ahh, true. Just re-tried... Realise now their form had confused me...

$70 for 100GB plus home phone... (no included calls, but pretty good rates compared to Optus) Will talk to them tomorrow to see about a connection.

    coda

Now connected. Getting about 36mbps download, 1.8mbps upload.

Wouldn't give me a phone line because I'm unemployed. Their loss.
