Default Random Photography Thread Version IV

Welcome to 2010. I thought that this would be a good time to start the next generation Random Photography Thread. v 3 had 50 pages and almost 1000 posts. Not to mention countless phenomenal photographs.

So I'll kick off with Melbourne welcoming in the new year.

Do you have any examples of images from your 100-400L and your 400 prime? I'm curious to see the difference.
    Cheers

I'll try and dig something up for you. My prime is a 300 f/2.8 though with a 1.4x TC attached it's 420 f/4.

    *EDIT*

Both these images are 100% crops, no processing at all. Obviously different birds but I have tried to crop from around the eye area in both as that's always my focus point.

I'm not sure this is really a fair comparison though as the 1-4 weighs in at around $2000 compared to the 300 at $6000!

    100-400mm f/4-5.6L IS USM

    300mm f/2.8L IS USM (With Canon 1.4x TC - 420mm)
Wow. I didn't realise that these two lenses had such a different price. And the clarity of the feathers really stands out with the prime. I suppose it would want to with a price tag like that!

I have never really looked at the telephoto primes. I have the 70-300 f/4-5.6 and find that I use it maybe a handful of times a month. If that. So right now I don't have any need for a telephoto prime.

It took me a little while to out grow my 17-85mm lens. When I finally got to the stage where I would refuse to use it because the image quality was so bad. I replaced it with the 24-105 f/4L. What a difference. The same can be said for the 50 f/1.8 and the 50 f/1.4 (well, almost. the 1.8 is a fantastic lens. The 1.4 is just that much better).

I guess I was curious because you said that you couldn't go back to a zoom after using the 300 prime. Considering the 100-400 is an L, I just assumed that image quality is comparatively awesome. The primes must be really awesome.

    Almost full moon

I kinda cheated on this one. I took one image with the trees/bird in focus and another with the moon in focus and blended them together....the view was the same in both pics though

My first attempt at a moon shot from last night. Pretty happy considering it was hand held after a few beers.

Wonderful photos! Having tried unsucessfully to capture decent shots of birds in the past I can appreciate your great work.

My style is much easier. Put on the sunscreen and hat, give the grommets plenty of sugar and add water!

Fourteen months since I last put photos into "Collection 3".
Here's a bunch more that were on the computer without doing too much fossicking around (there's a bunch of back up hard drives that serve as my archives).
Mainly shot w/ the D700, a bunch of lenses, worked up in Aperture and occasionally enhanced with Nik plug-ins.

    Default Star Trail

Just received my Yongnuo Timer Remote $46 AUS. BARGAIN! Canons version is well over $200. Just had to try it out.

    9 min
    f/4.0
    iso 100
    24mm

Think I need a wider lens

edit : Trails look a little wonky here. The larger version on flickr looks OK though.

I tried this the other night. I found anything over 20min caused lots of noise. So to get massive star trail shots you probably need to layer many 10min shots. Which I guess is a project for another day when I'm out of the city and can actually see stars.

So Canon's version is $200? Nikon's remote is about $40. Does the Canon one do magic tricks?
