Default Olympus and 4/3 lovers thread

Thought it was about time the 4/3 and Olympus legacy camera users had a thread to share news, info and thoughts about their gear.
I am looking forward to the release of the new Olympus micro 4/3 camera said to be on June 15th.
As an Olympus SLR fan I cannot wait to see what this new format brings.
The Panasonic G1 has been on my "almost buy" list for a long time, the only thing holding me back has been the imminent release of the Olympus new model(s?).
There are a few Oly lovers on this forum, what are your thoughts on the future of this new 4/3 format?

I for one am hoping they (someone) finally does a decent compact with a large sensor.

Even if it means I have to buy an Olympus again I'll be a happy man and I think micro 4/3 will be the answer!

    One of my pet loves.

I own an Olympus E1. They are VERY underated and get lost in the usual Nikon / Canon Pissing matches. Theire lenses are really really up there, mainly because the 4/3 format allows the lens deisgns to be highly telecentric. This makes it far easier to design VERY high quality optics for less$$. It's a great camera and i really love the 4/3 format.

The E1 is so well built. I have taken it all over the world and been very unkind and it hasn't missed a beat.

It's been around for a few years though now. It's not exactly new ??

    My E1 was released in 2003 !!

Olympus E-1 Review: 1. Introduction: Digital Photography Review

All shots from below aside from the last one were taken with my E1. The sensor was built by Kodak and it's got really great an accurate colour as well. It's been replaced int he last little while by the E3 which I am currently lusting after.

EDIT. Doh. Sorry. realise NOW that you mean a new micro oly...sorry bout that.

    HELL YES!

I have been holding off buying a camera since this was announced as a prototype.

So glad to see another fan also as keen for it as I am

Where did you hear this news of a June release mate?

I own an old Olympus OM2 (filmosaur)
its a great camera, still working after approx 25 years.

i havent used any of the oly DSLR cameras, although i have heard good things about the dust reduction, apparently it is much better than anything else.
they also effectively multiply lens focal length by 2x, so a 25mm lens has a similar field of view to a 50mm lens on a full frame body.
not so good for wide angle stuff, but for sports it should be great, would love to try an e3 with a sigma 120-300mm f2.8 for a day or two at the track, jsut to see how it goes compared to my canon gear

i really like the Mju1030SW underwater model though, not a huge zoom range, just a nice basic p&s that is waterproof to 10m providing its seals are kept clean. I will be adding one of these to my camera collection soon

that new micro4/3 oly looks nice, kinda like an old leica.
but it needs to have a viewfinder, for me to consider buying one

There have been a few rumours circulating around the various 4/3 websites about the announcement date. Here is a thread posted at the 4/3 forum about the proposed date.

Somebody once suggested I get a micro 4/3 because of my RSI/carpal tunnel issues. Wish I had listened to them. I'll be watching with great interest, the progress on the Olympus... I'd love to have got the G1 but the cost was too high for my pocket at the time.

Not sure how I feel about a viewfinder which has to attach to the hotshoe... right now, it lacks appeal.

Have just bought an Olympus OM 50 1.4 lens and am having fun with the DOF. It is giving some amazing results from just the short time I have had to play with it.
For less than $100 including the adaptor for 4/3 this lens is a wonderful addition to my camera bag.
This was shot handheld at F 1.4 1/320 ISO 200.

    I'm loving my E520 with a 70-300 and a 12-60 lens.

Perfect lens combo, imo. 24 - 600mm at 35mm equivalent.

    Grrrr, Arrrrghhh!!!

In about 2 weeks we should see this new micro 4/3 camera. Rumours are it will not look much like the mock up camera, there may even be 2 models released.
Here is an interesting article posted on another site about some of the micro 4/3 features.

Not sure if this is the new MFT Olympus, but this pic was leaked yesterday..

    E-P1 with 17mm 2.8 pancake lens.

Honestly think it's a bit of a shame it's not slimmer and smaller. I'm looking at this as a P&S replacement.

    Interesting! From that article..

"How close the E-P1 will be to the show concept, pictured above at PMA by CNET.com's Stephen Shankland, remains to be seen, but Olympus has been feeding the flames of speculation with a series of teasers related to the classic Pen camera. It seems the new model will definitely be retro-inspired at the very least.

Crave will be winging its way to Berlin this time next week for the international launch. Stay tuned and all will be revealed..."

Though to be fair, it's a very slim camera which allows for interchangeable lenses. Probably best comparing it to rangefinder cameras.

    I want one - badly.

The camera in the image is closer to a rangefinder size body, but the original concept looked to be smaller and slimmer, which is what I was after. Something around the size of an LX3, with a fast, wide pancake lens, but the option of sticking something else on it for special purposes.

The concept Olympus with a pancake 17mm 2.8 lens would've been my "goes with me everywhere" camera. At rangefinder size, it sort of starts getting into that chunkier "goes with me almost everywhere, as long as I don't mind consciously sacrificing some freedom of movement and some extra space in a backpack etc." category.

I'll wait to see it in the flesh before making up my mind for certain. If Aperture had RAW support for the Panasonic LX3, I probably wouldn't be waiting around for this Olympus still.
