Default iPhoto/Aperture book printing, who's tried it?

    Hi guys,

I've got iPhoto and Aperture 2 and am thinking of using them to make some small photo albums for Xmas presents.

I was wondering if anyone had tried the built in book printing options in either of these apps, although more specifically iPhoto. Which options did you try and how would you rate the quality? If it makes any difference all the pics have been taken on fairly high quality compact digi cams or entry level DSLRs. Did anyone have any particular issues with the service?

    TIA!

I have made both iPhone and Aperture books. Since Aperture was updated to 2.1.2 I have heard that the quality is through the roof. iPhoto on the other hand is still the crappy quality it always was.
I say make your books in Aperture (version 2.1.2) to get the best results.

If you want the the books for Christmas you need to get them off ASAP. I have found that the books take at least 3 weeks to be delivered as they come from the U.S.A. Your books might get caught up in the Christmas holidays and not be delivered on time.

    iPhoto book quality was 5/10
Aperture book quality was 5/10 (same as iPhoto)

I haven't tried a new Aperture book yet, but I've heard they are very good. The books I printed last year are O.K, but I wouldn't call them very good. They are alright for mum and grandma to pass around, but they are not what you would call professional quality. Since 2.1.2 though this issue should be sorted out.

I have just ordered my second book from iPhoto printing. The quality is great! Printing is sharp and vivid and the paper is nice.

If you are looking to get print products done before Christmas, December 4th is the last day to order to ensure you get them before the 25th.

I've done iPhoto and Aperture books.

I like Aperture better because you have full layout control but other than that they are mostly the same. Haven't printed one for a while though so don't know how the 2.1.2 books look....if they are better then they would look pretty awesome.

We've just done some calendars for Christmas of the two little girls. They can't be done in Aperture - so had to be done in iPhoto (why the heck is Aperture crippled like this anyway?).
But there wasn't an issue at all and they look great.
We do the occasional book from Aperture - it's great.
You're far better using Aperture as it gives you greater control.
I use Asukabook's for my client stuff. They're the best. But you pay through the nose - and generally just use Photoshop for the layout.

I am very happy with iPhoto printing service, I ordered a 58 page hardcover book on Sunday. On Tuesday morning I got and e-mail saying it had shipping at 2:02AM. Quick service!

Although it takes a while for it to arrive, it's very good value. Was happy with it when I ordered last year when it became available for Australia.

You missed out on the 20% off deal that was on during November though

BTW, I ordered 2 books at the end of last month, but they both got shipped on Monday so hopefully sometime next week I'll see them delivered at work.

I am with Blinder. Aperture books while very good are a notch below Asuka Books.

I have also been had one album/book printed with Couture Books which are US based. Their binding as well as printing was excellent....real artisan stuff. With the low Oz currency they are expensive.

The best book/album I have had printed was for a wedding I shot for a friend. Mixture of hand printed black and white and colour prints on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag and then sent to Cypress Albums for binding.

Aperture vs Iphoto - I think the only difference is with iphoto in the back cover there is printed with a mac logo which you can delete with Aperture. There was some talk about iphoto printing at 150dpi vs Aperture 300dpi but I can't seem find anything online that confirms this. With Aperture you can export as a PDF to send to an alternative printer like Blurb and SharedInk which print better books than Apple.

No, I got the deal. Saved myself $15!

digoxin, You can export iPhoto books to PDF. Do Aperture books cost more than iPhoto books?

I have done 3 books through iPhoto, just love them!!! Give it a go, you won't be disappointed.

One of my friends did one through snapfish and it's terrible compared to the apple ones!

    They are brilliant.

I ordered one through iPhoto when it first came available in Australia, and I was very impressed for the price.

You do get what you pay for, it is not a premium service, and professionals in the photo industry might not consider it up to scratch. But it still looks great.. and when you show friends and rellies your holiday snaps in an iPhoto book they will be very impressed.

I was more than happy with mine.

I've so far got 3 large hardcover iPhoto books and a couple of smaller books and they are awesome.
There is no contest between iPhoto books and snapfish and others in chain store or local photoshops.
I was very impressed with the price and quality, and people you show them to love them.
