Default correct resolution for artwork destined for hd tv

If I make a document that is 1920 x 1080 px in photoshop for to be used as a still advertisment on a wide screen tv, should I set the document resolution to 72 px per inch or should it be higher.

    Default Doesn’t matter

72 ppi is a relic from the early Macintosh days. Pixel densities on all computing platforms are much higher these days.

I stil use 72 because it’s a preset, and an old habit (been doing this stuff for over 20 years!), but it’s not at all important.

I don't know that it matters, normally when talking dpi or ppi you have a fixed size. IE you're talking about 6"x6" where changing the dpi/ppi actually changes the number of pixels you are working with and is relevant when wanting to print the output.

Since you have a fixed size in pixels to display on a screen at native res dpi/ppi doesn't factor in.

Oh yeah of course. Doh! I'm a bit of a relic myself.

And you may or may not know why 72ppi was chosen as the default resolution on the Macintosh. Because there are 72 points to the inch.

I could never stand working in points, but the old school type guy where I used to work liked it, then down to the pub for a hogshead of best bitter.

    Not exactly.

And that had to be the dumbest decisions both Apple and Adobe made. Apple generally had forward looking technology, this one looked back and we've been stuck with it ever since.

what version of photoshop do you have?
Some of the new versions have Film and TV as a preset option. Which also gives you title and action safe guides.

But yes, a canvas of 1920 x 1080 should be fine to work on for the HD TVs regardless of the dpi.
Unless you plan to print it afterwards, then I'd work with at least 150dpi.
